Is Microsoft SQL VM's are free in cost?

Somehow in my subscription some SQL VM's are auto deploying without my knowledge. Are they free of cost?

Thanks for contacting Microsoft Q&A platform.

If multiple VMs are being deployed, then you can expect a cost per Virtual Machine.

I would recommend checking your resources, what VMs are being deployed, and check the Cost analysis (watch it for an expense report).

I understand that you would like to know if Azure SQL VM doesn't incur any cost when deployed.

This depends on the Edition that is installed. If you have the Developer Edition like the SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition, then this is always free as long as you have an active subscription running as this is part of the free services when you create a new Azure account. However, you might incur debt due to the operating system (OS) in the virtual machine.

However, you might want to check why an SQL VM is automatically deployed within the tenant as that shouldn't be the case. I guess this should be the SQL assessment as shown in the screenshot below
