SharePoint 2016 and Office Online server

Hello,

Office Online Server is configured for my on premise SharePoint 2016 server. The Office Online Server component is not desired by my end users. Is Office Online Server required for SharePoint 2016? If not, how do I remove the connection from OOS to SharePoint? How will opening documents behave once this component is removed?

OOS is not an essential component of SharePoint.

When used with SharePoint Server 2016, Office Online Server provides Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online. Users can view and, in some cases, edit Office documents in SharePoint libraries by using a supported web browser on computers and on many mobile devices, such as Windows Phones, iPhones, iPads, and Windows tablets.

If you do not use OOS, the office file in SharePoint will be opened from the client, which will not affect your use.

For installing OOS on a dedicated server, I'd ran the below command:

Import-Module servermanager
New-OfficeWebAppsFarm -InternalURL "myInternalURL" -ExternalURL "myExternalURL" -SSLOffloaded -EditingEnabled

For connecting OOS and SharePoint (on a dedicated server), I'd ran the following command:
Import-module servermanager
asnp sharepoint
New-SPWOPIBinding -ServerName "myServerName" -AllowHTTP
Set-SPWOPIZone –zone “external-https”
$config = (get-spsecuritytokenserviceconfig)
$config.allowoauthoverhttp = $true
$config.update()

Per the link you've provided, it looks like they're removing OOS from the OOS server as well as the bindings. Can I just remove the bindings for SharePoint and OOS? So, run this command:

Remove-SPWOPIBinding -All:$true

Great. To make sure, removing the bindings mean that the OOS component will no longer work in SharePoint, correct? So, the office file in SharePoint will be opened from the client, correct?

OOS is only required if you need Excel Calculation Services. If you don't require that component, then you don't need OOS.

Without OOS, you can still open an Excel document in the Excel application, correct?

Yes, in the desktop application. You won't be able to open it via the web.

You @Trevor Seward and @Itch Sun-MSFT have been very helpful. Another thought just came to mind. Originally, I thought OOS was needed if you had an older MS client installed on your machine. So, for example, if an end user has MS Word, Excel 2013 and under installed, and need to open a document uploaded to SharePoint 2016, they would not be able to open the document. Is this statement true?

Hi @MDuBose
As far as I know, this will not affect their use. My test environment is SharePoint2016, but I can use office2013 to open files in SharePoint2016.
