Deploying Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Windows Server 2012

Is there a possibility to deploy Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (former: Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection) to an Windows Server 2012?

As far as i know, it's supported for the following operating systems:

Windows Clients:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10
  • ...

Windows Server:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • ...

But I didn't find any information regarding the deployment on Windows Server 2012 (or Windows 8).

If it's not officially supported:
Does anyone have some experience with Defender ATP on Server 2012?
Should I go for the Windows 7 deployment method (through Microsoft Monitor Agent) or the Windows 10 deployment method?

    That's correct it isn't support on Server 2012 (non R2)

    You may get it to install but in the end you'll have an unsupportable system. If down the road you needed to call microsoft for support the first thing they're going to want to do is get it to a stable supported condition. A better option may be to upgrade the operating system.

    I totally agree with you.
    But as you'll know, sometimes things aren't that easy :)
    (the migration is already planned in a timely manner)

    So if anyone has experience with ATP on Windows Server 2012, it would be fantastic if you give some insights.
    Especially which deployment method was used (Windows 7 (MMA) or Windows 10).

    Looking forward migrating this Windows Server 2012's to some newer and handier versions.
