I'm getting "0x80070643 Fatal error during installation" when trying to install Azure Sphere SDK. The issue happens when installing Tap Drivers, I can confirm I have no instance of this previously installed in my computer. After the installation fails, Windows Tap Driver appears properly installed in Device Manager, I Uninstall Device (and drivers also) and retry installation, same error. I have no other VPN software installed.

2020-11-19T13:16:54.417+00:00 I tried the steps described in the article, notice that those steps assume installation worked but Azure Sphere tools fail to connect to the device. In my scenario the installation of the SDK is failing and rolling back so I can only perform up to step #3 in that article (Uninstall any previous existence of Tap Driver) and then try to reinstall SDK. I can't run step #4 because Azure Sphere failed installation and there are no TapDriverInstall.ps1 file in the ProgramData/Azure Sphere folder.

Do you have any VPN software on the PC? Azure Sphere SDK configures a network adapter on the PC. If you have a VPN software, uncheck the VPN setting from Azure Sphere network settings.

Daniel Milner 1 Reputation point2021-11-01T08:39:25.03+00:00 The Powershell script doesn't work for me because "%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Azure Sphere\TapDriverInstaller\TapDriverInstaller.ps1" is not present. Is this because the SDK installation stopped (~50%) before this file was applied?
Also, I have tried this on 3x computers now to no avail. However, my old work laptop has no problem with this SDK but my IT dept are about to take this away from me. This at least suggests that our corporate AV software isn't the issue.
Does anyone know if I need a particular .NET installed or something?

2022-01-06T08:14:00.233+00:00 Update: in my case, after speaking to the super helpful ChandraNekanti-3683, I raised a ticket with my company's IT department to release the block on PowerShell scripts for this installation. It seems an IT policy had caused all of my PC's to be prevented from running PowerShell scripts - only an older (pre-installed with Sphere) PC was working. The Sphere installation went through perfectly after this.
Problem now solved.

I'm not sure whether it will help you or not, I too had the SDK error and this is what I did.
You can also restore using Restore points instead of resetting your PC if you have any. -

Exception: The term 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmic.exe' is not recognized as the name...which led me to this microsoft-removed-the-wmic-tool-from-windows-11-dev-builds
and then to this https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/wmisdk/wmic@QuantumCache - can you share details of any workaround files, or advise when a new version of the installer will be available ?

Aleš Golob 0 Reputation points2023-02-26T12:46:38.81+00:00 In my case the issue was that the TAP driver was already installed as a part of OpenVPN. I'm not sure if the running OpenVPN GUI taskabar programm was blocking the execution of the MSI, becase I didn't need OpenVPN and just uninstalled it altogether.
After uninstalling OpenVPN all the non working TAP interfaces for Device manager disappeared and the Azure Sphere SDK installation could complete without an issue.What led me to the OpenVPN conflict is that the TAP driver MSI is infact an OpenVPN package and is just packaged into the SDK installer.
