Can I use a Student subscription in Azure to create an HDInsight Spark cluster?

Hi all,

I am trying to create a Spark cluster in HDInsight (the name of the resource is Azure HDInsight) with my Student subscription.

I have tried googling but couldn't find clues in the Microsoft documentation. I have my $100 unused, but when I go to HDInsight and try to select the machines type, I cannot select any of them. I always get 0 cores available in every region. I have already enabled Microsoft.Compute and Microsoft.HDInsight in my subscription's Resource providers. Should I enable any others?

If it is just not possible at all with a Student subscription, I think it should complain from the very beginning (first tab of the process), when I select the subscription for the project in "Project details", right?

Thanks a lot

    Hello @Pablo J ,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A platform.

Unfortunately, you cannot create the Azure HDInsight cluster with the Student subscription.

Reason: With an Azure Student subscription, you will initially be able to access only Azure services that are available with a free tier of service use.

For more limitations, refer to the below links:

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/students/

You may want to look at a pay-as-you-go subscription as this should allow you to deploy a cluster, however, may not allow you to utilize the benefits of a student subscription.

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/offers/ms-azr-0023p/

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.

    Hello @Pablo J ,

    1. Can I create a cluster in HDInsight if I use the "Free trial" (1 year, 170 euros) subscription?

Unfortunately, you cannot create any HDInsight cluster because it requires more than 8 cores.

Reason: Azure Free Trial subscription has a limit of 4 cores, and you cannot create an HDInsight cluster using a Free Trial Subscription.
You need to upgrade to a Pay-As-You-Go subscription to create Azure HDInsight clusters.

Note: Free Trial subscriptions aren't eligible for limit or quota increases. If you have a Free Trial subscription, you can upgrade to a Pay-As-You-Go subscription.

    1. I still think that the first step of the cluster creation, which requires selecting the subscription to be used, should immediately display a red message next to it, saying that HDInsight is not compatible with the Student subscription. This would certainly save a lot of time.

Thanks for your valid feedback. I would suggest you to provide feedback on the same:

All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Azure.

    1. What is the purpose of the $100 credit that I get with the Student subscription? What kind of things can I do with them?

Azure for Students gives you 100 USD credit for 12 months and access to more than 25 free products, including compute, network, storage, and databases. Any charges incurred during this period are deducted from the credit.

Example: As part of this subscription, you will get Linux VMs – B1S VM for 750 hours free. Once you had run the VM for more than 750 hours, you will be billed as per the VMs cost (€0.0088/hour) which will be deducted from 100 USD.

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.
