unknown-rule join method in MIM breaking galsync

I'm having issues with MIM making joins, but setting the join method as "unknown-rule" instead of "projection-rules" or "join-rules". This is causing major issues for galsync, since it uses the join method to determine what to do with a connectorspace object. Does anyone know where this "unknown-rule" thing might be coming from?
