Hi all,

I staring having problems with my media center pc (windows 7) after I got a new cable modem. The old one broke after 9 years of use. I'm having the same problem in windows 7 and windows 10 on this pc now. I tried to move to windows 10 but no media recording software was to my satisfaction so I use another hdd to reinstall windows 7 and media center (I did this long ago). The windows 10 hdd is in the case but not connected. The point I'm trying to make is that I can use either windows 7 or 10 exclusively on this pc. The pc is a shuttle SH55J2 (http://global.shuttle.com/news/productsDetail?productId=1409) with an Intel i5, 8GB RAM. The pc has been working fine for years until I got the new modem. BTW other computers and wireless devices are connected to the modem and all are fine.

The problem is that when I connect the pc to the network and put it to sleep. When I go back to use it after a couple of days it won't connect to the network (win 7 or 10) and things get weird... like the remote for media center won't lunch media center (win 7), if I try to shutdown it gets stuck in "shutting down" (win 7 and 10). After weeks of testing I found that if I don't connect the network cable when I put it to sleep all works fine. I tested for weeks and no problems. Most of my testing is done in windows 7 though. If I connect the network cable I know I have to unplug the cable and reboot before I put it to sleep or it will get weird. I have a backup hdd with windows 7 that I tried and it has the same results. Of course it found the new network/modem so it popped the same window asking for the network type when I connected it the first time...oh yeah I forgot to say that ... the new modem did that for windows 7 and 10.

I tried removing the network driver and reinstalling, updated the bios from 106 to 107 and also ran the ram memory test from windows (7 and 10). The ram tester finds problems when it gets weird but no problem when I don't connect the network cable. The pc has 4 memory modules. I removed 2 and tried to find which memory module may be defective by swapping them but it doesn't matter. There is always a bad module if the network cable is connected and no problem if not connected. This does not convince me that the memory is the problem.

The network connection says "home network 2". Reinstalling windows 7 and setting everything right for media center is a pain in the rear so before I do that I'd like to "clean" the network files if even possible but I don't know how.

Is there a way to clean the windows network files? I say windows because removing the shuttle network driver is not a problem but remember that the problem still there after I reinstall them.

Thanks ... and sorry for the long post.

When the system comes out of sleep perform the following in an elevated command prompt:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

See if that gets the network going again.

The only way to clean up the image is to re-install Windows.

I tried "ipconfig /release" but it said:

"The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation."

I turn on the pc to add a program to record on Sunday and I plug in the network cable. The network icon showed an x. This is normal when it goes weird and (of course) the network cable is unplugged, which it was...the pc was also asleep (this is the point where I tried ipconfig /release). The strange thing is that after I plug the network cable it works (the x goes away) but this time it didn't. I shutdown, restart and nothing...I had to unplug the pc for a couple of minutes after shutdown and restart for the network to work again. I'm wondering if there really is a hardware problem.

    Hi,

I'm wondering if there really is a hardware problem.

I would suggest you reinstall the OS. If you still have such problem after reinstalling the system, then it is probably a hardware problem.

    Best Regards,

    Candy
