SCCM with SUP - For Image Updates Only

Hi, I have a SCCM server that has a pretty basic setup for some imaging and inventory purposes.
This organization also has a WSUS server, older, working, and completely separate.

I don't want to do anything to their WSUS server - or, do as little as possible.

I simply want to configure and schedule Windows Updates for the SCCM images that I made.

So, my use case is something like this:

  1. I know I need to install the WSUS console (not database) on the SCCM server.
  2. I have to install the SCCM SUP and run a wizard of some kind.
  3. Then, I will follow the instructions on scheduling updates of the images.

The critical thing is that I want to as little as possible to the WSUS server. I simply want to use it to install updates to images stored in SCCM.

make sense? any advice?
Thanks
Phil M.

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.

Yes, we could add the sup role in the existing WSUS environment. When the software update point is configured, specify the synchronization settings. Configuration Manager connects to the WSUS server that runs on the software update point server and configures WSUS with the same settings. Please compare the configuration for products and classifications with your Configuration Manager settings. If you synchronized the existing WSUS server before configuring it as a software update point, and the lists of products and classifications are different, it syncs all of the software updates metadata regardless of the configured settings. This behavior results in unexpected software updates metadata in the site database.

For the sup configuration, please refer to this article:

    Have a nice day!
