Several questions about Azure Data Share Roadmap and Management

We are doing POC right now to use Azure Data Share to share Databases from Kusto to Kusto, and:

  1. Will ADS(Azure Data Share) available in GA and AG clouds? If not what’s the timeline we are tracking?
  2. Does AG clouds allow extension support got management of invites and removal of shares? Does this become a task for cleared engineers or can be automated via extensions? Do we use portal UI for ADS or have to build a UI leverageing ADS REST API.
  3. When we choose the recipient it would be target email, would it have an ADS account attached to it? Can this be SGs or is it restricted to alias? In most cases we are sharing to a team, and in this case would we have better representation of recipients than an email?( I saw from the .net API that Invitation could send to options more than targetEmail.) Or is that on the roadmap?
  4. Since our scenario is Kusto to Kusto, what visibility could we have on which Kusto cluster/Database our customer uses to follow us?
  5. Does this have restrictions on tenant in the public cloud? For example, Can ADS share to follower DB in a cluster that not in AME tenant subscription if its still in the same region?

Our team has a lot of questions to ask. Would be helpful if we initiate an email thread with contacts from both teams. Thanks!

    Hello @Yiqun Ouyang ,

    1. Will ADS(Azure Data Share) available in GA and AG clouds? If not what’s the timeline we are tracking?

Would you please clarify what is AG clouds? Data Share service is generally available in commercial clouds as well as USGov Virginia and Arizona. Any other sovereign regions will likely be next calendar year.

    1. Does AG clouds allow extension support got management of invites and removal of shares? Does this become a task for cleared engineers or can be automated via extensions? Do we use portal UI for ADS or have to build a UI leverageing ADS REST API.

We support both Data Share UI and API in USGov clouds.

In the UI, the only option is email login of the user. In API, you have the option of user/service principal plus Azure tenant ID. If you specify an Azure tenant ID, invitation and data can only be received into this Azure tenant. Note that once a recipient configures the target Kusto cluster, recipient can grant other data consumers permission to this target Kusto cluster. So you can allow the entire SG to have access to the data. Only the invitation is sent to a user/service principal.

    1. Since our scenario is Kusto to Kusto, what visibility could we have on which Kusto cluster/Database our customer uses to follow us?

Data provider will not have visibility into the consumer Kusto cluster for privacy reason. Is there any reason you need this information?

    1. Does this have restrictions on tenant in the public cloud? For example, Can ADS share to follower DB in a cluster that not in AME tenant subscription if its still in the same region?

You can only share data within commercial cloud or within USGov clouds. You cannot share between commercial and USGov clouds.

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.
