DPM 2019 VM or in "in guest agent" VM backup

Good Morning All.

DPM 2019 SQL 2019, backing up VM's of various Windows versions on W2016 Clusters.

I can backup the VM (Agent installed on Host) and restore by drilling down through the VM and or the whole VM - I can see this is useful say for a VM with Oracle (unless you mess around with "maybe" supported VSS writers) where you can in effect Checkpoint the whole VM, or a VM with an "unsupported OS type or version"

Is backing up via installing the Agent "in" the VM primarily for say VM Apps that are supported by the Agent so SQL for one.

Any tips appreciated as to best real world practise.

    Hi @Pompy George ,

    For protection of SQL Servers, you would be best off by installing the DPM agent on the servers directly, this way you can protect the SQL Server at the instance or database level, also when you protect at the instance level, DPM will automatically detect and add new databases to its protection group.

    @Leon Laude agreed re SQL, but that's not what I really asked.. I just wondered if you agreed with what my thoughts were re VM (Host) backups V Agent in guest backups..
