I am trying to upgrade a window 7 desktop to window 10. But during the second boot I get a BSOD with error pnp watchdog error and then it restart in windows 7 with an error code of window 10 failed to install FIX 0xC1900101 – 0x40017. In the event log I get a error of volmgr id 46 crash. Do anybody know what the hang up is with my upgrade. I know it is possible because I have done it to three desktop so far with very little issues. TIA

    Hi,
If you have a Driver PnP watchdog error it is related to a hardware issue, or a driver issue.
This is generally an issue with Windows not being able to properly identify the device. Your first stop should be in BIOS. Reset bios to default settings, and run a diagnostic and make sure that the motherboard can see all of your installed components.
The drive maybe so old that it need to be in IDE Mode. You might try checking the SATA controller settings. If they are set to AHCI, try setting them to IDE.
Try replacing updating the driver, if you can load into windows, or you may have to replace that part.

Hope above information can help you.

    Hello @scole40404

Try enabling a clean boot: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

Instructions are for Win 10 but procedure in Win 7 is very similar.

If problem persists collect setupact.log from C:\$Windows~bt\panther folder.

    Regards,

    Juan S.
