Selecting an Option in Ribbon Doesn't Automatically Return me to my Word Document

On my fairly new laptop, when I choose to add automatic bulleting to a document or when I choose to insert a symbol (both options available through using the Ribbon area at the top of the Word document), selecting the bullet or the symbol does not automatically return me to my Word document so that I may continue typing. I actually have to use my mouse to click on the document itself to begin typing. It's driving me crazy, and I cannot find any setting to change so that this laptop acts like every other computer I've ever used Word on. I don't know if any other Ribbon options are affected -- I just have encountered the problem with these two, very often-used, features.

Greatly appreciate any help you can give. Even my IT person is stumped on this one.

P.S. - I had no idea how to "Tag" this post -- and the instructions were of no help.

    Please check what version of Office are you using now?

    I suggest you run Word in safe mode to check this issue.

    • Enter Win+R to open Run dialog, enter "winword /safe", click OK.
    • Create a new blank document, check this issue.

    If this issue is reproduced in Safe Mode, please refer to JohnKorchok's answer, perform a Online Repair from control Panel for Office.

    If this issue does not occur with Safe Mode, please go to Word > Options > Add-ins > Manage, COM Add-ins > Go, clear the check boxes for any enabled COM add-ins, select OK, then check this issue again.

    It's also recommended to update Office to have a check.
