What happens when you try to add the managed identity to the group?

Good afternoon, we attempted adding a Managed Identity for Purview to a Security Group using these directions:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/purview/register-scan-power-bi-tenant
For some reason, the security group won't allow us to add the Managed Identity to a Security Group. Maybe it's because the Managed Identity can only be seen at a subscription level?
Is it possible for me to change the Purview managed identity account to a Service Principal we created instead? Does anyone have instructions or more information on this?
Thanks in advance
