Hello Gents,

I've started with SCOM few days back and now I jumped into discovering network devices.

I discovered device through ICMPONLY and problem is that it's name is IP address.

I've tried to search on internet but it seems there is not much solution yet. Is there any way how to change display name for network device, which has been discovered through ping only?

I would like to avoid changing/editing DNS records.
Thank you,
Vaclav

I resolved it by adding DNS record to host file on all management servers.

    Thank you

Short answer : check that all your network devices have entries in your forward and reverse dns zones.

More details : SCOM network monitoring is actually using SMARTS under the hood. You'll find an explanation of how its name resolution algorithm works here : https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/332348

If everything looks alright but it still doesn't work for you, have a look at this workaround : https://www.catapultsystems.com/blogs/opsmgr-2012-network-device-discovery-assigns-arbitrary-name-not-related-to-host-name-or-dns-record/
