Last week Microsoft decided to replace a health Intel driver with a broken driver that I haven't yet identified. That's a problem for another day, currently I cannot restore my system to a working day as I receive the following error:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed while restoring the directory from the restore point.
Source: AppxStaging
Destination: %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070057)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

This was a perfectly healthy system prior to Microsoft breaking it with a bad driver update.

Things I've tried:

  • chkdsk and sfc, both report no problems, PC is healthy
  • Renamed %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps
  • Other restore points, they all produce the same error

I'm not looking to wipe the computer or reset it, it was perfectly healthy, I'm looking for technically minded advice on how to navigate around Microsoft's bugs.

Thanks in advance!79914-screenshot.png

    @William Gault
    Hi,
0x80070057 most often has to do with the system partition not being correct if you used a 3rd party program and imaged the C partition only and not the system partition and the C then you'll have this error.

    If it's a Microsoft back up see this> https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/982736?wa=wsignin1.0
Hope above information can help you.

It is not a Microsoft backup and I believe it was originally a fresh install of Microsoft Windows 10 build 1809 or 1903 and it has been upgraded since then to 1909 which is what it is now.
