Host Pool VMs need Active Directory

Hi,

I wanted to expand on the following question where the final post suggested starting a new thread, which I can't find.

I want to create a host pool in Windows Virtual Desktop with VM's ready to go, but one of the steps is adding an AD link, which as the previous poster suggests fails.

It also fails for me as I don't currently have a link to my on-prem AD via VPN or some-such.

The answers to the thread further up seem to suggest that you can join the WVD host pool VM to Azure AD. Can someone explain whether this is possible and if so how, please? Otherwise when you go to create the pool, it fails stating it can't connect to AD.

    WVD has a set if requirements. Amongst those is that all VMs must be domain joined not Azure AD joined. While VMs can be joined to Azure AD that does not cover the requirement for the VMs to be AD DS (domain joined).

    In that case, the question is how do I test the Host Pool Creation and add VMs in a dev environment without an on-prem AD? I had considered trying to set something up in a lab but gateways and VPN aren't my strong points. :(
