Since there is no way for a Team Owner to do this today, it's up to admins to utilize PowerShell to try to tackle this issue. Does anyone know what the proper steps are to do the following? Rename SharePoint site : in SharePoint admin center > select “Active sites” > select the site you want to rename and click “Edit”. Please note that if you want to edit the URL, it will break the relationship of teams. Rename team email address : in Microsoft 365 admin center > select “Groups: Active groups” > select the team which you have renamed > Edit the primary email address by the new name. Please note that the original email address cannot be deleted. It will take around 24 hours to take effect. Rename notebook : I didn’t find a suitable way to do that now. Rename Planner : the name of the task is unrelated to the team name. The following image shows the difference before and after renaming teams. Rename Stream site : the name is automatically renamed. To rename a team in Teams, click on the three dots next to the team (more options), click Edit team. From there, you can rename the team name, along with description, and privacy settings. Hope this helps!

I noticed that if you edit the group name of a plan in planner, this will change the name of the team that that group refers to. However, if you change the name of the team from Teams, the group name in planner does not change. This feels slightly odd to me, I would have thought that Teams itself would be the definitive place to change the Team name, but it appears that Planner (and perhaps other apps that link to Teams) have more power over this. Also, the only way I can see to move a plan from one team to another is to copy it and choose another group which is a team (i.e. not all groups are teams, but all teams seem to be groups).

Thank you for your Answer, SharonZhao. However, it looks like you are referring to Azure DevOps maybe? I was just referring to Microsoft Teams and the related SPO site, group email, default team notebook, plans, and stream group. It's amazing Microsoft has not come up with an easy way for these changes to be made if a Microsoft Team owner changes the name of their team. If a team owner changes the name of their team (which they can do today), all those other connected resources should rename automatically to maintain the same consistent experience as when it was the previous name.

You are right. Currently, it has no simple way to rename team and its related resources.

Someone reports a similar feature request in Teams UserVoice. You could vote for it here and add your comments.

Microsoft will always focus on customer’s feedback and experience. Some new features would be added to the services based on customers' feedback in the future, and your good ideas will be very helpful for them to improve the service.

I'm hoping to rename a Teams group without it causing linking issues to the existing SharePoint site and other related documentation (e.g., OneNote, email distribution group). I'm hoping to change it so the email distribution group name is different than it is currently, would changing the name of the Teams group be a solution for this?

Regarding renaming of the notebook. If you navigate to the SharePoint site -> Site contents -> Site assets, you can rename the Notebook from the ellipsis menu ( … ). The change syncs immediately to the desktop OneNote applications, and edits in the notebook are synced as usual.

This process is correct. On renaming the Team's OneNote, you can go to the associated SharePoint Online Teams site > Site contents > Site Assets > the notebook is located here. Hit the three dots and select Rename.

As for getting to the Team in SharePoint Online. The easiest way I have found is to go to the Files tab in the Teams app and click on Open in SharePoint. If you don't see that option, on the bar that has New, Upload, and so on, at the end of the options you will see three dots, the option will be in there.

This works, but I don't believe the new name resolves in the original SharePoint link rendering the link broken.

Sorry folks...that doesn't work. That just changes the display name of the team and the display name of the site. It doesn't fix the URL or the group email. So, all file links will still reference the old name. I also don't think it renames the team notebook.

@Michal Ziemba I am the owner of the team. In the old version there is an edit button, in the new version there isn't. When switching back and forth between the 2 versions the button disappears and reappears.

Sorry to hear that it doesn't work at your end.

I am switching between an old and a new version and it works as expected.

Here is what version of Teams I am using:

Microsoft Teams version 23285.3604.2469.4152.

The client version is 49/23101227707.

And here is the screenshot I got from the new Teams when I went to the settings of the selected team.

Since we confirmed that it should work, I suggest contacting Microsoft Support and asking them to fix the issue.

Coming into this a bit late, but the issue is with the new Teams Client recently being pushed. In the old client clicking the ellipse and then "Edit Team" works fine, but in the new client you have to click "Manage Team" and then, if it is a Team created in the new Teams Client, then the "Settings" option shows as shown in Michael's screenshot above. If the team was created in the old teams client, you cannot edit the team name except by going using the old client. Hopefully a bug that MSFT fixes soon.
