SCCM - OSD Task Sequence for Windows Server 2016/2019 stops after "Setup Windows and Configuration Manager"

Hi,
I'm trying to deploy Windows Server 2016/2019 on a Proliant Gen10 server (BIOS/UEFI). I've follow HPE documentation to import drivers on SCCM. The task sequence stops after the "Setup Windows and Configuration Manager" reboot. The server is joined to domain but a weird thing I've noticed here is that GPOs are not applied (I have a GPO that disable the domain firewall, so the firewall is on). The _SMSTaskSequence folder is not existed in C drive. The error in smsts.log in Temp folder didn't help. On a Hyper-V VM the Task Sequence is working (BIOS/UEFI). My Configuration Manager server is on version 2103 (i had the same behaviour with 2010).

Any ideas?

If the task sequence works on a VM but not hardware it is likely hardware / driver related, especially if it happens during the mini setup phase. Check that there are no additional drivers you may need and that the BIOS is up to date. If there are multiple drives, check that all looks normal once it crashes - like the _SMSTaskSequence folder is not on some odd drive letter.

    Hi,

Firstly we can check whether the CM client agent is successfully installed and running properly:

    1. Open the Control Panel on the client side and confirm that the item Configuration Manager appears.
    2. Click the Configuration Manager applet to show the properties, confirm that the Assigned Management Point is the correct SCCM server running as a Management Point

If the client agent is sucessfully installed, the smsts.log will be stored in c:\windows\ccm\logs\Smstslog\smsts.log.
If it hasn't been installed, we can refer to this article to find the location of smsts.log:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/30109.sccm-how-to-copy-smsts-log-when-a-task-sequence-fails.aspx

As you mentioned that the GPOs are not applied on the client, this is because Windows group policy normally doesn't process until after the task sequence is complete.
For more details, here is an article that can be used for reference: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/osd/understand/task-sequence-steps#BKMK_SetupWindowsandConfigMgr

Hope the information above can help you.
