Thanks for your answers, I solved the issue with a clean install and then changing a registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/ForegroundLockTimeout to 0 thats seems to have done the trick. The version of Windows I have is Win 10 Build 19013

Thanks all for reading and offering advice

Hi, with the information you added, please know that usually the windows will have the focus by default. The fact you don't have that by default make me think that you might have a unwanted third part programs loaded that can cause the problem.

Check on your taskbar to be sure nothing is opened and you can validate in the task manager (by pressing ctrl-alt-delete) to see if any application there could cause the problem.

    Thanks

If for example I open notepad, it dosnt have the focus so you have to click on it before you can type into it.
This is true with any app like wordpad, word, etc etc

What I mean to say is that if I have say my browser open and my email then if I open say notepad it is not given the focus, the focus stays with what ever I was doing like writing a mail or browsing. What I would like it to do is if I open a new app as well as whats already opened then that would instantly get the focus.

    Thanks for your help.

As yagmoth says, that is not normal Windows behaviour. When you open a new application from the start menu, shortcuts, or taskbar, it usually does get focus. So there is something not normal about your Windows setup, or something else is keeping focus, or a change to your registry.

You should probably also provide more information, like which version of windows you are using?
