When the components of the document are extracted from the file that is downloaded from Google Docs, instead of the Media folder being inside the Word folder, it is inside the "root" folder of the archive

While Word 2010 is able to accommodate the misplacement of that folder, Word in Office 365 does not appear to be able to handle the misplacement.

It is the standard behavior of DocumentFormat.OpenXml .NET library. It creates a different structure from office 365, but is it the reason if at least one picture works? Looks like not.

This works fine in Word 365 Version 1806(Buid 10228.20134)

See http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/InvisibleGraphics.htm. Also, ensure that you are looking at the document in Print Layout view.

This works in any other programs ( Word 2016/2019, online viewers) except Word 365. If you resave the document in Word 2016 - then it is displayed correctly in Word 365. So it looks like a regression.
Steps:

Open document from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XaugkuiYkoWjNiO0I7fWwjdKGmh-f09z/view?usp=sharing

Save document on local drive

Open document in Word 365

It seems that your insert the table first, and then insert the image.

Could you please test if you insert the image directly, whether this issue could be reproduced.

The image is inside the table. If I insert a picture directly into Word 365 then everything works well, but existing documents will not display correctly

As far as I can tell, your sample document only includes one picture which is linked to the header.

Presumably, you meant to upload a different version.

EDIT: I just realized that the document is in Google Docs format, so the problem seems to be with the conversion to Word document format.

Consider checking with Google Help.

Google has its own problems. If you download a document and then view it in online viewer - you will see the correct result

Well, my point was that Google is creating the problem during the conversion/download.

I'll see if someone can take a look at the underlying XML and maybe find a solution.

But the thing is, you can't be sure that a Word document will be correctly edited in another program, the same way that you can't be sure that Word correctly edits and saves files which are in other formats than the native formats supported by Word.
