Hi,

We are planning to upgrade windows server 2016 standard to windows server 2019 standard.

Currently we have 4 Linux VM present under windows server 2016 standard, after upgradation to windows server 2019 standard ,do we need to purchase additional license for running linux VM?

Thanks

Prasad

You're reseller's trained licensing specialist will be your best resource for specific legal licensing requirements.

do we need to purchase additional license for running linux VM

This isn't a microsoft product so I'd ask the software vendor about linux licensing.

A good question. Some general info here.

    Some general info

    • Each host needs to be licensed.
    • A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.
    • Core licenses are sold in packs of two.
    • Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be licensed again.
    • DataCenter Edition provides rights for unlimited Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed.

It reads to me like two operating system environments for Standard edition. More can be found here.

but this did not change from Server 2016 to Server 2019 if that's what you're asking.
