Inherited DNS Issue

I have ran across a DNS issue as it relates to scavenging and aging. I had a reverse lookup that did not match a nslookup. I begin to look into it and found some things that didnt appear to be correct. Aging times, intervals not matching etc.

For instance, forward lookup zone "internal.dns.zone" seems to have the current ip addresses assigned by dhcp (which it should so no problem there). Go to the reverse lookup zone for the subnet in which the IP address resides and the IP still shows an old entry.

Aging for "internal.dns.zone" is set to 3 days NRI and 3 days for the RI.

Aging for the reverse lookup zone is 1 hour for NRI and 6 hours for RI

I suspect that this is where the issue is coming from however, I am a network and security guy and not a server guy and would like to get a better understanding of the the issue and any immediate ramifications of changing it.
