Narrator says "Operation Timed Out"

I have a WPF application with a couple of custom UI Elements that can be invoked. One shows a System.Windows.MessageBox, the other shows a context menu.
When I press enter to execute them using Narrator, it announces "operation timed out" instead of the right contents. The strangest part is that this does not reproduce when I click the elements.
Any ideas on why Narrator would say such thing? How can I investigate this further?

Which Narrator are you using? Is it a screen reader for win10 system? For further analysis, please show your detailed steps and related complete code. -

Some thoughts:
If I replace my custom button with a standard WPF button, the dialog is announced. However, if I replace it with a standard WPF Hyperlink, the bug reproduces.
Narrator focus indicator does not leave the hyperlink when the bug is reproduced. If I press enter again, Narrator says "command not available" even if keyboard focus should be inside the dialog.
I was able to reproduce with other elements that "steal" focus, e.g. context menus.
