I have below queries:

  1. Once the classic exchange admin center goes away, does it mean we have to recreate all the retention policies and tags in the O365 compliance center - information governance - retention policy location? as at present we don't see those are synced.
  2. In compliance center retention policy, for exchange, how do we create a default policy tag that says archive emails older than 3 years? We have that tag at present in Exchange. But while browsing the compliance center retention policy, i do not see any option to archive. All are deleted or retain forever.

It will not go away until the "classic" retention tags/policies functionality has been migrated, or a suitable replacement is made available. At least that's the answer we got from Microsoft's PM on this. Even if they flip the switch on the old EAC, you can still use PowerShell - they've not announced deprecation of the classic retention tags/policies functionality.
As for using the new retention policies in the SCC, there is no Archive action available, if that's what you require stick to using the "classic" stuff.

    Hi @GoodResource

The retention policy(MRM) in Exchange Admin Center is different from the retention policy(SCC) in O365 compliance center.
Here is an article from Exchange team blog introducing the differences in details for your reference:

    Back to your questions:

1.Once the classic exchange admin center goes away, does it mean we have to recreate all the retention policies and tags in the O365 compliance center - information governance - retention policy location? as at present we don't see those are synced.

Since they are different features, you don't need to or cannot recreate the retention policies which was created in EAC in the O365 compliance center.

2.In compliance center retention policy, for exchange, how do we create a default policy tag that says archive emails older than 3 years? We have that tag at present in Exchange. But while browsing the compliance center retention policy, i do not see any option to archive. All are deleted or retain forever.

Since you would like to use MRM retention policy in Exchange Admin Center, and since this feature isn't available in the new Exchange Admin Center, you may need to use the classic EAC or EXO powershell to manage it.

You can access the classic EAC in the new EAC:
