In-place upgrade from 2012 r2 to 2019 affect on spanned volume

Question

We have a 2012 r2 server we are trying to do an in-place upgrade to 2019, the question is how will the upgrade affect the spanned volume that is on the 2012 r2 server. Not sure if need to just move the volume of if there is a different option.

Is the Windows Server operating system located on the spanned volume? The in-place upgrade shouldn't affect your volumes.

I don't think the in-place upgrade will affect your spanned volume.

The spanned volume is one type of the dynamic volumes and the information about dynamic volumes on the disk is recorded in a database. Each dynamic disk in your computer stores a replica of the dynamic disk database. On MBR disks, the database is contained in the last 1 megabyte (MB) of the disk. On GPT disks, the database is contained in a 1-MB reserved (hidden) partition known as the Logical Disk Manager (LDM) Metadata partition.

The database shouldn't be modified during a in-place upgrade as it should only replace the OS files in your system drive. In case the database on one dynamic disk is corrupted, there is a chance it could be repaired using the database on another dynamic disk.

Hi,

Agree with Leon, the upgrade in-place should not impact the spanned volume.
For you information , upgrade in place is not recommended method to upgrade you server in production environment.

You should build new server on Windows 2019 from scratch then migrate all services in old server to new one.
