Have a few vms that are backed up, I'm unsure if i'm billed for them and how much it is costing?

    However I would like to share some insight on your query

    The new pricing model for Azure Backup has two components:

    Protected instances: This is the primary billing unit for Azure Backup. Customers pay for the number of instances that are protected with the Azure backup service
    Storage: Customers can choose between Locally Redundant Storage (LRS) or Geo-Redundant Storage (GRS) for their backup vault. The net price for Storage depends on the amount of data stored with the service.
    These two components appear as separate line items on the monthly Azure bill.

    Virtual machine: The in-guest operating system could either be running Windows Server or Linux. The hypervisor fabric that runs the virtual machine could be either Hyper-V or Azure IaaS.

    Application servers: Windows Server physical or virtual machine that is running an application or workload that needs to be backed up. Common workloads are Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Dynamics and the File Server role of Windows Server. System Center Data Protection Manager is needed to backup these workloads.

    Windows Client: Any instance or client device that is running the Windows client OS.

    NOTE: Virtual machine backup and in-guest workload backup are charged independently.

    Hi,

    The Azure calculator above is the best way to calculate your costs.
    As soon as you enable backup, you will get billed the following:

    The cost of the protected instance
    Azure will charge per protected instance (per virtual machine in your case). The cost varies based on the size of the VM:
    0.5 instance is charged for VMs that uses up to 50GB of total storage
    1 instance is charged for VMs that uses between 50GB and 500GB of total storage
    an additional instance is charge for every 500GB of total storage thereafter.
    a few examples:

    • a virtual machine with one 32GB disk attached will be charged 0.5 instance
    • a virtual machine with one 128GB disk attached will be charged 1 instance
    • a virtual machine with one 128GB disk and one 512GB disk attached will be charged 2 instances

    The cost of storage used in the vault
    In addition to the instances charge, you will also be billed for the storage used in the Recovery Services Vault.
    This cost is charged per GB. Depending if you selected LRS or GRS for the vault itself, the cost will vary.

    Keep in mind that costs does vary in general based on the location of resources.
