Create a videos tab in a Teams channel

Allow members of a team to find videos easily by creating a modern SharePoint page with web parts and pinning that page to a channel tab in Microsoft Teams. Using such a tab to feature videos for your viewers is very similar to the Microsoft Stream (Classic) concept of adding a Stream channel tab in Teams. Storing and accessing videos in Microsoft 365 the same way you would any other file is the basis for the new version of Microsoft Stream (built on SharePoint).

Overview of displaying a set of videos in Teams

Display a set of videos on a channel tab in Teams by creating a SharePoint page for your team site using the Highlighted content web part. You can then add that page as a new tab in a Teams channel. You can configure how the video files are filtered, sorted, and displayed. Visitors to the tab can click on a video to watch it directly in Teams.

Note

You must be a Team owner, site owner, or SharePoint administrator to add pages. If you are a Team or site owner but are unable to add a page, your administrator may have turned off the ability to do so.

Storing video files on Teams

Before we start work on the videos page, let's talk about how to get videos into Teams. As your team or class works together, you'll likely have video files that you'll want to share. Teams makes it easy.

Your files library

Within each team, there are channels. Think of these channels as a place for your entire team or class to discuss a specific topic, such as upcoming projects or areas of study. Each channel has its own file folder where you can share files for that specific channel. To access that folder, go to the channel and select the Files tab above the conversation window (see image below).

Note

Make sure to use the Files tab at the top of the channel conversation window instead of the Files button on the left side of the app. That button gives you access to ALL your cloud files, rather than just the files for a specific channel.

Uploading video files to Teams

There are three primary ways to add video files into your Teams library.

Drag and drop - Open the Files tab for your team, and then with your cursor, drag the file from where it's currently located and drop it on the Files page.

Upload - Select Upload, then select the file (or files) you'd like to upload and select Open.

Record a Teams meeting - When you record a Teams channel meeting, a link to the meeting recording shows up in the channel conversation. The channel meeting recording is stored in the Teams channel Files tab > Recordings folder (see image below), unless your admin has enabled block downloads for Teams channel meeting recordings, in which case it's stored in the channel's Files tab > Recordings > View Only folder.

Any video files you upload with these three methods will be accessible by any member of your team or class. Just like in SharePoint, you can pin specific files to the top of your list for easy access.

Creating a new videos page for your team site

Now that we've covered the uploading and storing video files in Teams, follow these steps to create your new videos page.

  1. In Teams, select the channel where you'd like to have a new videos tab.

  2. Select the ellipsis (...) at the top-right of the channel and then Open in SharePoint to navigate to the Teams channel site in SharePoint.

Shows the Posts tab in a Teams General channel; select the Open in SharePoint option from the ellipsis menu at upper right

  3. Select Settings (cog) at the top-right of the page and then Add a page.

  4. Type in a title for the page, such as "Videos."

  5. Click the web part Edit button (which looks like a pencil) just above and to the left of the page title.

  6. In the Title area web part pane that opens on the right, under Layout, select Plain.

  7. Would you prefer that your profile name and photo aren't shown below the page title? If so, hover over your name and then click the X in the upper right corner of the name field.

  8. If you prefer that viewers do not leave comments on the page, toggle the Comments switch to off.

  9. In the vertical space between the Title web part and Comments, click the circled plus sign symbol, then scroll down and select the Highlighted content web part.

  10. Click the web part Edit button (looks like a pencil) just to the left of the Highlighted Content web part title.

  11. In the Highlighted content web part pane that opens on the right, go to the Content section and...

    a. Under Source, select A document library on this site.

    b. Under Document type, select Video.

On the videos page, the Source and Document type filters of the Highlighted content web part are marked in red

  12. Scroll all the way down in the Highlighted Content web part pane to set other options.

    a. If you'd like the most recent videos to always be at the top of the Highlighted Content web part, change Sort by to Most recent.

    b. The default number of videos that will be shown in the Highlighted Content web part is eight. If you'd like more or fewer videos to show, change the value under Show up to this many items at a time. Note: A maximum of 200 items can be returned.

    c. By default, when the Source is set to A document library on this site, the title of the web part becomes Documents. If you prefer, you could change that title to something more intuitive, such as Most recent videos.

On the videos page, the Highlighted content Sort by, Show up to this many items at a time, and web part title are marked in red

  13. Close the Highlighted content web part pane by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the pane, just under your profile picture, then click the Publish button that is near the top of the page.

Add the videos page as a tab in Teams

  1. In Teams, select the channel page. To the right of the channel name (General, for example), select the + on the tab bar.

Back in the Teams General channel, the plus sign to add a tab is marked in red

  2. Select the SharePoint icon.

In the Add a tab dialog box, the SharePoint icon is marked in red

  3. Select Pages to see a list of existing SharePoint pages. Select your new videos page to add it as a tab in the Teams channel.

In the SharePoint Add a tab dialog box, on the Pages tab, we see the Videos page circled in red

  4. Leave the Post to the channel about this tab checkbox selected to automatically post an announcement in the Teams channel letting members of your team know that you've added this tab.

  5. Select Save.
