Local Network Adapter Configuration

For your local network adapter, it is recommended that you accept the default values.
If the network adapter was already assigned an IP address, that information was used as the default value. Otherwise, the network adapter was assigned a default IP address of 192.168.16.2 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. The default values are private IP addresses, which help to secure Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server requires a static IP address for the network adapter used to access your local network.
Private IP addresses cannot be routed on the Internet and must be routed through a server using network address translation (NAT).
- After completing Setup, if you plan to connect to the Internet, you must configure NAT using the Routing and Remote Access service. For more information about how to configure NAT, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Alternatively, if you can use a hardware device that supports NAT. Many router devices used to connect to the Internet support NAT. For more information, see your manufacturer's documentation.
Changing the default values
If you want to use a different IP address and subnet mask, consider the following:
The IP address you select must be valid. A valid IP address cannot be 0.x.x.x, 169.254.x.x, or 127.0.0.1, and it cannot exceed the 223.x.x.x range.
It is strongly recommended that you not use a public address, or routable IP address. If you decide to do so, first obtain an address from your Internet service provider (ISP).
It is recommended that you configure your local network to use one of the following private address blocks, as specified in Request for Comments (RFC) 1918:
The 192.168.0.0/16 private network allows the following range of valid IP addresses: 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.255.254
The 172.16.0.0/12 private network allows the following range of valid IP addresses: 172.16.0.1 to 172.31.255.254
The 10.0.0.0/8 private network allows the following range of valid IP addresses: 10.0.0.1 to 10.255.255.254
