Connect to the Internet

Platí pro: Windows SBS 2003

Complete this task to correctly configure settings for your network, firewall, secure Web site, and e-mail services that are used when connecting the local network to the Internet.

Before completing this task, fill out the Required Information for Connecting to the Internet form to record information that will be used to configure settings for your network, firewall, secure Web site, and e-mail services. It is recommended that you contact your Internet service provider (ISP) for information needed to complete the form. Additionally, ensure that the server is properly connected to the Internet with the type of connection device you are using, as follows:

To connect the server to the Internet connection device

  • If you have a dial-up connection to the Internet that uses a modem or ISDN terminal adapter, ensure that the phone line is connected to the modem or adapter on the server, as shown in Figure 1. If you are using an external modem, ensure that the modem is turned on and connected to the server.

  • If you have a broadband connection to the Internet that uses a router, such as a dial-on-demand router or ISDN router, the server can use one or two network adapters.

If the server uses the same network adapter to connect to both the local network and the Internet, ensure that the topology is configured as shown in Figure 2. In this configuration, your router is the default gateway and firewall to the Internet. Ensure that the router is connected to the Internet using the instructions provided by your Internet service provider (ISP) and that the device is turned on.

If the server uses one network adapter to connect to the local network and one network adapter to connect to the Internet, ensure that the topology is configured as shown in Figure 3. In this configuration, your server is the default gateway to the Internet. Ensure that the router is connected to the Internet using the instructions provided by your Internet service provider (ISP) and that the device is turned on.

  • If you have a broadband connection to the Internet that uses a cable or digital subscriber line (DSL) modem, ensure that the network adapter used by the server is connected to your broadband connection device. This connection type requires that the server use two network adapters. Ensure that the topology is configured as shown in Figure 4. In this configuration, your server is the default gateway to the Internet. You can then enable the firewall when you complete the Connect to the Internet task on the To Do List, which protects your local network from unauthorized Internet access. Ensure that the broadband device is connected to the Internet using the instructions provided by your Internet service provider (ISP) and that the device is turned on.

When you click this task, the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard appears.

Note

  • If you upgraded from Small Business Server 2000, your Internet connection settings were preserved. However, you should still complete the Connect to the Internet task because the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard has new functionality that was not included in the Small Business Server 2000 Internet Connection Wizard.
