Configure Update Services

Platí pro: Windows SBS 2003

When you complete Setup for the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (Windows SBS 2003 R2) Technologies, Update Services is installed, but synchronization is not enabled or running. Update Services synchronization does not begin until you open the Server Management console and enable synchronization.

Poznámka

If you have not run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW) before enabling synchronization, a message appears on the home page for Update Services prompting you to run the CEICW. You must complete the CEICW before you can enable synchronization.

To run the CEICW, click Start, and then click Server Management. In Standard Management, click To Do List. In the details pane, click Connect to the Internet.

Complete the following procedure to enable Update Services:

To enable and begin Update Services synchronization

  1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.

  2. In the console pane of the Server Management console, in Standard Management, click Update Services. The Update Services home page appears.

  3. Click Synchronize now to enable and begin Update Services synchronization.

Synchronization between Update Services and the Microsoft Update servers begins immediately, unless you choose the option to start the first synchronization at a later time. By default, all later synchronizations are scheduled for 10:00 P.M. nightly.

Default configuration settings

The settings required to run Update Services are configured for you when you complete Setup. To view or change these default settings, open the Update Services Settings dialog. You can open the dialog by clicking on the Change Update Services Settings link on the Update Services home page. The default settings are summarized as follows:

Update Services Settings Dialog

Location Default setting

Server Updates tab

The update level is set to Medium (recommended). At this level, Update Services automatically downloads and approves only the security and critical updates for installation on servers that are registered with Update Services.

Client Updates tab

The update level is set to High (recommended). At this level, Update Services automatically downloads and approves security updates, critical updates, and service packs for installation on client computers that are registered with Update Services.

Schedule tab

  • For servers: Set to Download updates, and notify the user that updates are ready to be installed. This setting requires user intervention to install updates.

  • For client computers: Set to Install updates, and then reboot according to this schedule. This setting does not require user intervention to install the updates.

The default schedule for installing updates on client computers is Every day at 3:00 A.M.

Included Computers tab

Client computers and additional servers on the Windows SBS network are detected automatically and then included in the Servers or Clients computer group.

Language setting for updates

The default language for updates is determined by the language setting of the server that is running Windows SBS 2003 R2. For example, if the language setting of your server is German, updates downloaded for the network are in German by default.

Additionally, if Update Services detects a computer on the network that has a different operating-system language setting, updates downloaded for the network are in that language as well. For example, if the language setting of the server is English, but the language setting of a client computer is German, updates that are downloaded for the server are in English, and updates that are downloaded for the client computers are in German. In other words, Update Services downloads updates in every operating-system language that is registered with Update Services.

Důležité

Update Services cannot detect the language of individual applications that are installed on a computer. For example, if you have the French version of Microsoft Office 2003 installed on a computer that is running the English version of Windows XP, Update Services does not detect the language of the Microsoft Office 2003 application.

In these instances, you must use the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) administrator's console to select the additional language to download.

Důležité

You cannot change the language setting for updates by using the Update Services snap-in in the Server Management console. To change the language setting for updates, you must use the WSUS administrator's console.

To do so, click Start, and then point to Administrative tools. Click Windows Server Update Services. When the WSUS home page appears, click Options. On the Options page, click Synchronization Options. When the Synchronization Options page appears, click Advanced under Update Files and Languages.
