Configuring remote connections

The Remote Access Wizard creates a Connection Manager package that client computers use to remotely access the Microsoft® Windows® Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) network. After the Remote Access Wizard is completed:
If you have not yet set up client computers, run the Set Up Computer Wizard to designate which client computers will be given remote access permissions.
If you have set up client computers, run the Assign Applications Wizard to designate which client computers will be given remote access permissions.
Add remote users to the Mobile Users template.
After running the Remote Access Wizard and the Set Up Computer Wizard, you can create a remote connection disk to give to remote users. The disk contains all of the necessary settings to configure the remote computer. After inserting the floppy disk into the remote computer, the user types a:/setup to connect to the computer running Windows SBS.

Guidelines for remote computers
Critical operating system components, properties, and features must be configured before you can enable users to use a computer remotely. Note the following guidelines:
Because portable computers are vulnerable to theft, format all hard drives with the NTFS file system and apply the appropriate permissions to files and folders that contain sensitive data. Sensitive files can also be encrypted by using the Encrypting File System (EFS). For more information, see "Encrypting and decrypting data" at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=53406).
Use the Folder Redirection Group Policy to redirect Windows SBS folders to network locations. Folder Redirection enables users to back up important data on the server and frees up disk space on the client computer. For more information, see Client Document Redirection.
Enable and configure file-storing settings on the server or shared folder for the files and folders that you want to make available offline.
Offline files are stored on the portable computer and give remote users access to files and folders that are on the network. This is done by storing the network version of files and folders on the local hard disk. When users are not connected to the network, they have access to the offline version of the files and folders as though they were connected to the network.

Mobile users should carry a copy of the Microsoft® Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional installation CD with them. Certain disaster recovery and repair features are only available from the CD.
