Setting up computer accounts

Every client computer running Microsoft® Windows®  XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional that joins the domain (and is connected to the network) has a unique computer name and computer account.


Computer accounts are also created for computers running Windows NT® Workstation 4.0, but these computers are not supported in client Setup. For more information about manually configuring these client computers, see Configure client computers running earlier versions of Windows.

Similar to user accounts, computer accounts enable you to administer and audit the computer's access to the network and to the Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain.

Each client computer also has a unique security ID. If a client computer is reformatted, it must be rejoined to the domain.


You do not need to create computer accounts for client computers running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows XP Home Edition. When users supply user credentials, these client computers can connect to resources on the network without joining the Windows Small Business Server domain. Because these computers do not have computer accounts, you cannot manage them in Active Directory®.

You create computer accounts by using the Set Up Computer Wizard.
