Install and configure the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service

If you use line-of-business applications that send e-mail or you receive system health reports in e-mail, you can continue to receive them after Exchange Server is removed. If these conditions do not apply to your environment, you do not need to complete the procedures in this section.

To continue to receive e-mail from your server, you must install the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service to enable your server to relay e-mail to Exchange Online. You must also set the service to start automatically, and you must configure the service to communicate with Exchange Online.

To install the SMTP service

  1. Click Start, and then click Server Manager.

  2. In the console tree, click Features.

  3. In the Features pane, click Add Features.

  4. In the Add Features Wizard, click SMTP Server, and then click Add Required Features.

  5. Click Next, and then click Install.

To set the service to start automatically

  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  2. Right-click Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and then click Properties.

  3. In the Startup Type box, select Automatic, and then click OK.

To configure the SMTP service

  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager.

  2. In the console tree, expand your server, right-click SMTP Virtual Server #1, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Access tab, click Authentication, select Integrated Windows Authentication, and then click OK.

  4. On the Delivery tab, click Advanced, in the Smart Host box type mail.global.frontbridge.com, and then click OK.
