Socket Constructors

Definition

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class.

Overloads

Socket(SafeSocketHandle)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class for the specified socket handle.

Socket(SocketInformation)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class using the specified value returned from DuplicateAndClose(Int32).

Socket(SocketType, ProtocolType)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class using the specified socket type and protocol. If the operating system supports IPv6, this constructor creates a dual-mode socket; otherwise, it creates an IPv4 socket.

Socket(AddressFamily, SocketType, ProtocolType)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class using the specified address family, socket type and protocol.

Socket(SafeSocketHandle)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class for the specified socket handle.

public:
 Socket(System::Net::Sockets::SafeSocketHandle ^ handle);
public Socket (System.Net.Sockets.SafeSocketHandle handle);
new System.Net.Sockets.Socket : System.Net.Sockets.SafeSocketHandle -> System.Net.Sockets.Socket
Public Sub New (handle As SafeSocketHandle)

Parameters

handle
SafeSocketHandle

The socket handle for the socket that the Socket object will encapsulate.

Exceptions

handle is null.

handle is invalid.

handle is not a socket or information about the socket could not be accessed.

Remarks

This method populates the Socket instance with data gathered from the supplied SafeSocketHandle. Different operating systems provide varying levels of support for querying a socket handle or file descriptor for its properties and configuration. Some of the public APIs on the resulting Socket instance may differ based on operating system, such as ProtocolType and Blocking.

Applies to

Socket(SocketInformation)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class using the specified value returned from DuplicateAndClose(Int32).

public:
 Socket(System::Net::Sockets::SocketInformation socketInformation);
[System.Runtime.Versioning.SupportedOSPlatform("windows")]
public Socket (System.Net.Sockets.SocketInformation socketInformation);
public Socket (System.Net.Sockets.SocketInformation socketInformation);
[<System.Runtime.Versioning.SupportedOSPlatform("windows")>]
new System.Net.Sockets.Socket : System.Net.Sockets.SocketInformation -> System.Net.Sockets.Socket
new System.Net.Sockets.Socket : System.Net.Sockets.SocketInformation -> System.Net.Sockets.Socket
Public Sub New (socketInformation As SocketInformation)

Parameters

socketInformation
SocketInformation

The socket information returned by DuplicateAndClose(Int32).

Attributes

Remarks

If you call the Socket constructor multiple times with the same byte array as the argument for each call, you will create multiple managed Sockets with the same underlying socket. This practice is strongly discouraged.

Applies to

Socket(SocketType, ProtocolType)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class using the specified socket type and protocol. If the operating system supports IPv6, this constructor creates a dual-mode socket; otherwise, it creates an IPv4 socket.

public:
 Socket(System::Net::Sockets::SocketType socketType, System::Net::Sockets::ProtocolType protocolType);
public Socket (System.Net.Sockets.SocketType socketType, System.Net.Sockets.ProtocolType protocolType);
new System.Net.Sockets.Socket : System.Net.Sockets.SocketType * System.Net.Sockets.ProtocolType -> System.Net.Sockets.Socket
Public Sub New (socketType As SocketType, protocolType As ProtocolType)

Parameters

socketType
SocketType

One of the SocketType values.

protocolType
ProtocolType

One of the ProtocolType values.

Exceptions

The combination of socketType and protocolType results in an invalid socket.

Remarks

The socketType parameter specifies the type of the Socket class and the protocolType parameter specifies the protocol used by Socket. The two parameters are not independent. Often the Socket type is implicit in the protocol. If the combination of Socket type and protocol type results in an invalid Socket, this constructor throws a SocketException.

Note

If this constructor throws a SocketException, use the SocketException.ErrorCode property to obtain the specific error code. After you have obtained this code, refer to the Windows Sockets version 2 API error code documentation for a detailed description of the error.

Note

This member outputs trace information when you enable network tracing in your application. For more information, see Network Tracing in .NET Framework.

Applies to

Socket(AddressFamily, SocketType, ProtocolType)

Initializes a new instance of the Socket class using the specified address family, socket type and protocol.

public:
 Socket(System::Net::Sockets::AddressFamily addressFamily, System::Net::Sockets::SocketType socketType, System::Net::Sockets::ProtocolType protocolType);
public Socket (System.Net.Sockets.AddressFamily addressFamily, System.Net.Sockets.SocketType socketType, System.Net.Sockets.ProtocolType protocolType);
new System.Net.Sockets.Socket : System.Net.Sockets.AddressFamily * System.Net.Sockets.SocketType * System.Net.Sockets.ProtocolType -> System.Net.Sockets.Socket
Public Sub New (addressFamily As AddressFamily, socketType As SocketType, protocolType As ProtocolType)

Parameters

addressFamily
AddressFamily

One of the AddressFamily values.

socketType
SocketType

One of the SocketType values.

protocolType
ProtocolType

One of the ProtocolType values.

Exceptions

The combination of addressFamily, socketType, and protocolType results in an invalid socket.

Remarks

The addressFamily parameter specifies the addressing scheme that the Socket class uses, the socketType parameter specifies the type of the Socket class, and the protocolType parameter specifies the protocol used by Socket. The three parameters are not independent. Some address families restrict which protocols can be used with them, and often the Socket type is implicit in the protocol. If the combination of address family, Socket type, and protocol type results in an invalid Socket, this constructor throws a SocketException.

Note

If this constructor throws a SocketException, use the SocketException.ErrorCode property to obtain the specific error code. After you have obtained this code, refer to the Windows Sockets version 2 API error code documentation for a detailed description of the error.
