HMACRIPEMD160 ist eine Art von Schlüsselhashalgorithmus, der aus der RIPEMD-160-Hashfunktion erstellt wird und als Hash-basierter Nachrichtenauthentifizierungscode (HMAC) verwendet wird. Der HMAC-Prozess mischt einen geheimen Schlüssel mit den Nachrichtendaten, hasht das Ergebnis mit der Hashfunktion, kombiniert diesen Hashwert erneut mit dem geheimen Schlüssel, und wendet dann die Hashfunktion erneut an. Der Ausgabehash ist 160 Bit lang.

Ein HMAC kann verwendet werden, um zu ermitteln, ob eine Nachricht, die über einen unsicheren Kanal gesendet wurde, manipuliert wurde, sofern der Absender und Empfänger einen geheimen Schlüssel teilen. Der Absender berechnet den Hashwert für die ursprünglichen Daten und sendet sowohl die ursprünglichen Daten als auch den Hashwert als einzelne Nachricht. Der Empfänger berechnet den Hashwert der empfangenen Nachricht neu und überprüft, ob der berechnete HMAC mit dem übertragenen HMAC übereinstimmt.

Jede Änderung an den Daten oder dem Hashwert führt zu einer Fehlübereinstimmung, da das Wissen über den geheimen Schlüssel erforderlich ist, um die Nachricht zu ändern und den richtigen Hashwert zu reproduzieren. Wenn die ursprünglichen und berechneten Hashwerte übereinstimmen, wird die Nachricht authentifiziert.

HMACRIPEMD160 akzeptiert Schlüssel einer beliebigen Größe und erzeugt eine Hashsequenz, die 160 Bit lang ist.

Der RIPEMD-Hashalgorithmus und seine Nachfolger wurden vom europäischen RIPE-Projekt entwickelt. Der ursprüngliche RIPEMD-Algorithmus wurde entwickelt, um MD4 und MD5 zu ersetzen und später RIPEMD-160 umzubenennen. Der RIPEMD-160-Hashalgorithmus erzeugt einen 160-Bit-Hashwert. Die Designer des Algorithmus haben sie in der öffentlichen Domäne platziert.

Aufgrund von Kollisionsproblemen mit MD4 und MD5 empfiehlt Microsoft SHA256 oder besser.
