MSN Explorer: Help protect your personal information

Follow these guidelines to help protect your personal information while you are online:

  • Keep your password secret and follow the rules for creating a strong password. For more information, go to the Microsoft security website.

  • Read each website's privacy statement before disclosing any personal information about yourself. If the site doesn't have a policy, or if it intends to use your information in ways that you don't feel comfortable with, leave the site without disclosing any personal information.

  • Use discretion. Be cautious about revealing information like your bank account numbers, passwords, driver's license number, and family members' names.

  • When sending personal information across the Internet, make sure that the website uses encryption. If a site uses encryption, you should see a small icon depicting a closed lock in the status bar of your browser.

  • Look at the site’s web address. A website that is protected by SSL has “https” at the beginning of its web address, instead of “http”. The “s” at the end stands for “secure”.

  • If you have children who use the Internet, review these guidelines with them. Be sure that they know about the importance of getting your permission before sharing any personal information online.
