EncryptedType.Type Property

Definition

Gets or sets the Type attribute of an EncryptedType instance in XML encryption.

public:
 virtual property System::String ^ Type { System::String ^ get(); void set(System::String ^ value); };
public virtual string Type { get; set; }
public virtual string? Type { get; set; }
member this.Type : string with get, set
Public Overridable Property Type As String

Property Value

A string that describes the text form of the encrypted data.

Examples

The following code example demonstrates how to encrypt and decrypt an XML element using the EncryptedData class that derives from the EncryptedType class.

using System.Xml;
using System.Security.Cryptography;
using System.Security.Cryptography.Xml;

class Program
{
    static void Main(string[] args)

        // Create an XmlDocument object.
        XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument();

        // Load an XML file into the XmlDocument object.
        try
        {
            xmlDoc.PreserveWhitespace = true;
            xmlDoc.Load("test.xml");
        }
        catch (Exception e)
        {
            Console.WriteLine(e.Message);
        }

        // Create a new TripleDES key.

Remarks

The Type attribute is an optional attribute that identifies type information about the text form of the encrypted content. While optional, this is an important attribute and is used in mandatory processing described in Processing Rules: Decryption (section 4.2) of the XML Encryption Syntax and Processing specification (https://www.w3.org/TR/xmlenc-core/). If the <EncryptedData> element contains data of type 'element' or element 'content', and replaces that data in an XML document, it is strongly recommended that the Type attribute be provided. Without this information, the application attempting to decrypt the information will be unable to automatically restore the XML document to its original text form.
