override this.PrependChild : unit -> System.Xml.XmlWriter
Public Overridable Function PrependChild () As XmlWriter

Returns

An XmlWriter object used to create a new child node at the beginning of the list of child nodes of the current node.

Exceptions

The current node the XPathNavigator is positioned on does not allow a new child node to be prepended.

The XPathNavigator does not support editing.

Examples

In the following example, a new pages child element is prepended to the beginning of the list of child elements of the first book element in the contosoBooks.xml file using the XmlWriter object returned from the PrependChild method.

XmlDocument^ document = gcnew XmlDocument();
document->Load("contosoBooks.xml");
XPathNavigator^ navigator = document->CreateNavigator();

navigator->MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
navigator->MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books");

XmlWriter^ pages = navigator->PrependChild();
pages->WriteElementString("pages", "100");
pages->Close();

Console::WriteLine(navigator->OuterXml);
XmlDocument document = new XmlDocument();
document.Load("contosoBooks.xml");
XPathNavigator navigator = document.CreateNavigator();

navigator.MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
navigator.MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books");

XmlWriter pages = navigator.PrependChild();
pages.WriteElementString("pages", "100");
pages.Close();

Console.WriteLine(navigator.OuterXml);
Dim document As XmlDocument = New XmlDocument()
document.Load("contosoBooks.xml")
Dim navigator As XPathNavigator = document.CreateNavigator()

navigator.MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books")
navigator.MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books")

Dim pages As XmlWriter = navigator.PrependChild()
pages.WriteElementString("pages", "100")
pages.Close()

Console.WriteLine(navigator.OuterXml)

The example takes the contosoBooks.xml file as an input.

Remarks

Prepending a child node adds the new node to the beginning of the list of child nodes for the current node. For example, when three child nodes exist for an element, the prepended node becomes the first child node. If no child nodes exist, then a new child node is created.

The following are important notes to consider when using the PrependChild method.

PrependChild(String)

Creates a new child node at the beginning of the list of child nodes of the current node using the XML string specified.

public:
 virtual void PrependChild(System::String ^ newChild);
public virtual void PrependChild (string newChild);
abstract member PrependChild : string -> unit
override this.PrependChild : string -> unit
Public Overridable Sub PrependChild (newChild As String)

Parameters

newChild
String

The XML data string for the new child node.

Exceptions

The XML string parameter is null.

The current node the XPathNavigator is positioned on does not allow a new child node to be prepended.

The XPathNavigator does not support editing.

The XML string parameter is not well-formed.

Examples

In the following example, a new pages child element is prepended to the beginning of the list of child elements of the first book element in the contosoBooks.xml file.

XmlDocument^ document = gcnew XmlDocument();
document->Load("contosoBooks.xml");
XPathNavigator^ navigator = document->CreateNavigator();

navigator->MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
navigator->MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books");

navigator->PrependChild("<pages>100</pages>");

Console::WriteLine(navigator->OuterXml);
XmlDocument document = new XmlDocument();
document.Load("contosoBooks.xml");
XPathNavigator navigator = document.CreateNavigator();

navigator.MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
navigator.MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books");

navigator.PrependChild("<pages>100</pages>");

Console.WriteLine(navigator.OuterXml);
Dim document As XmlDocument = New XmlDocument()
document.Load("contosoBooks.xml")
Dim navigator As XPathNavigator = document.CreateNavigator()

navigator.MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books")
navigator.MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books")

navigator.PrependChild("<pages>100</pages>")

Console.WriteLine(navigator.OuterXml)

The example takes the contosoBooks.xml file as an input.

Remarks

Prepending a child node adds the new node to the beginning of the list of child nodes for the current node. For example, when three child nodes exist for an element, the prepended node becomes the first child node. If no child nodes exist, then a new child node is created.

To create a new element node, include all XML syntax in the XML string parameter. The string for a new book node is PrependChild("<book/>"). The string for appending the text "book" to the current node's text node is PrependChild("book"). If the XML string contains multiple nodes, all nodes are added.

The following are important notes to consider when using the PrependChild method.

PrependChild(XmlReader)

Creates a new child node at the beginning of the list of child nodes of the current node using the XML contents of the XmlReader object specified.

public:
 virtual void PrependChild(System::Xml::XmlReader ^ newChild);
public virtual void PrependChild (System.Xml.XmlReader newChild);
abstract member PrependChild : System.Xml.XmlReader -> unit
override this.PrependChild : System.Xml.XmlReader -> unit
Public Overridable Sub PrependChild (newChild As XmlReader)

Parameters

newChild
XmlReader

An XmlReader object positioned on the XML data for the new child node.

Exceptions

The XmlReader object is in an error state or closed.

The XmlReader object parameter is null.

The current node the XPathNavigator is positioned on does not allow a new child node to be prepended.

The XPathNavigator does not support editing.

The XML contents of the XmlReader object parameter is not well-formed.

Examples

In the following example, a new pages child element is prepended to the beginning of the list of child elements of the first book element in the contosoBooks.xml file using the XmlReader object specified. The http://www.contoso.com/books namespace is specified so that the new child element is prepended using the same namespace as the XML document.

XmlDocument^ document = gcnew XmlDocument();
document->Load("contosoBooks.xml");
XPathNavigator^ navigator = document->CreateNavigator();

navigator->MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
navigator->MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books");

XmlReader^ pages = XmlReader::Create(gcnew StringReader("<pages xmlns=\"http://www.contoso.com/books\">100</pages>"));

navigator->PrependChild(pages);

Console::WriteLine(navigator->OuterXml);
XmlDocument document = new XmlDocument();
document.Load("contosoBooks.xml");
XPathNavigator navigator = document.CreateNavigator();

navigator.MoveToChild("bookstore", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
navigator.MoveToChild("book", "http://www.contoso.com/books");
