Release notes for Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) releases in 2016

These release notes provide information about new features, security updates, and non-security updates that are included in Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) updates to Office 365 ProPlus in 2016.

Note

  • The following also provides information about new features, security updates, and non-security updates for Visio Pro for Office 365 and Project Online Desktop Client.
  • This information also applies to Office 365 Business, which is the version of Office that comes with some Office 365 plans, such as Business Premium.
  • Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) was named First Release for Deferred Channel prior to September 2017.

Skype for Business: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where viewers see a black screen when a user is running Windows 7 and shares the main monitor first, and then switches to share a second monitor.

Word: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where Word crashes when doing a Save As and the user has selected the option to delete files from the Office Document Cache when they are closed.
  • Fix an issue where Word crashes when doing a Save As to a folder that contains a large number of files, such as over 30,000 files.
  • Fix an issue where the CTRL+ALT+4 shortcut doesn't type the Euro sign when using a UK keyboard.

  • Fix an issue where, when files are synced from a OneDrive for Business site to a local computer using the OneDrive sync client, saving a synced back file that was opened from a URL causes Word, Excel, or PowerPoint to hang.

  • Update UI to “Share”: Change "Present" to "Share" in UI elements, such as changing "Present Desktop" to "Share your Desktop" and "Present Program" to "Share a Window."

Skype for Business: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where the user can't connect to Exchange to get conversation history, contact, or voicemail information after the user has been migrated to Exchange Online.
  • Fix an issue with the conversation window where trying to paste information into the dial pad or into text annotations in the whiteboard incorrectly pastes the information into the chat input text box.

Visio: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where Visio won't close after closing a saved Visio file.
  • Fix an issue where large metafiles or highly zoomed metafiles appear blurry.

Word: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where the focus switches to a small dialog box in the upper right corner when typing East Asian characters using an Input Method Editor (IME) and then the user can't continue editing the document.

Office suite: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue with VBA form controls that can cause transparent label controls to appear opaque, can cause existing forms to no longer appear or work as expected, and can cause the Office application to stop responding when attempting to open a macro-enabled file that contains form controls.
  • Fix an issue where, when using managed metadata properties, a "Show Details" button appears in the Properties section under File > Info instead of the metadata values that are set.
  • Fix an issue where the Help pane appears as a separate dialog box, instead of within the application, when selecting Get Help when using Tell Me.
  • Fix an issue where OfficeC2RClient.exe doesn't recognize "channel" as an optional setting.
  • Fix an issue where the new version and build format doesn't show in the Office Updates section under File > Account.
  • Fix an issue where switching to a different update channel may result in an earlier build being installed the next time the update process is run.
  • Fix an issue with printing to printers that use a V3 version of the GDI printer driver.

Access: Feature updates

  • dBASE support: Support for importing or linking to data stored in dBASE databases (.dbf). More information

Access: Non-security updates

  • Fix an issue where executing a query with a sort when using the Access Database Engine, such as in the Access app or with an add-in that uses the Access Database Engine as a data provider, causes the app to crash.
  • Fix an issue where the Field Size drop-down for Number data types doesn't display any values, which prevents the user from specifying the type of Number field when creating or modifying a table.

Excel: Feature updates

  • Data Transformation and Connectivity enhancements: Add parameters to queries, create new queries from Merge or Append operations, and use the Web connector to preview web pages.
  • Macro recording for charts: Support for Treemap, Histogram, Pareto, Waterfall, and Box & Whisker charts.
  • Power Query layouts preserved: Formats and calculated columns for data imported using Get & Transform are preserved after queries refresh.
  • Data transformation and connectivity improvements: Perform additional Date/Time transformation and Text manipulations, migrate workbooks to a different environment, group two or more clauses for row filtering, and document transformations within the Query Editor window.
  • Publish to Power BI: Publish locally stored files to Power BI, with a Power BI subscription.
  • Shape Recognition: Automatically transform your drawings into shapes.
  • New connectors: Create a query using options from the new Online Services category including connectors to SharePoint Online, Exchange, and SAP HANA.
  • PivotTables with OLAP connections: Improved the performance when you create, edit, and refresh PivotTables with OLAP connections.
  • Data transformation improvements: Convert duration values to years, support for whitespace and line feeds in Query Editor preview, and rename queries directly from the Queries pane.
  • Data connectivity improvements: Detect jagged CSV files, support for authentication with a Microsoft account when using the Exchange connector, and validate URLs provided by users when trying to connect to their SharePoint List.

  • Fix an issue where the ENTER key doesn't work to separate list entries when creating a custom sort list in the Customs Lists dialog box.
  • Fix an issue where copying or moving information causes an error message to appear, such as "Cannot open the Clipboard" or "We couldn't free up space on the Clipboard. Another program might be using it right now."
  • Fix an issue where Excel hangs when trying to edit a workbook that contains numerous text boxes.
  • Fix an issue, caused by a recent security update, where opening an HTML file from an untrusted location opens Excel with a blank (empty) screen with no errors displayed, instead of allowing the user to open the file in Protected View.
  • Fix an issue where inserting a PivotTable based on an invalid range causes an incorrect error message to display.
  • Fix an issue where when you save a workbook that includes a programmatic undo level by using Application.OnUndo, the last change to the workbook is undone.

  • Fix an issue where ghost ink strokes appear when switching from the Lasso tool to the inking tool.
  • Fix an issue where dragging and dropping content selected with the Lasso tool causes OneNote to crash.
  • Fix an issue where the panning hand disappears when moving over the page.
  • Fix an issue where deleting a table causes OneNote to crash.

Outlook: Feature updates

  • @mentions: Make sure that recipients know they're being asked for input or action by including the @ symbol followed by the person's name to the body of an email or calendar item. This will also automatically add them to the To line. More information
  • Summary cards for travel reservations and packages: Verify and track travel reservations, as well as package deliveries, using summary cards automatically created in the Inbox and Calendar. More information
  • Mini-previews for attached photos: When a photo is attached to an email, Outlook shows a small preview of the photo in the message.
  • Recover deleted items link: In the Deleted Items folder, a "Recover items recently removed from this folder" link appears above the list of deleted items, and brings up the Recover Deleted Items dialog box when the link is selected.

  • Fix an issue where automatically hyperlinking a screenshot to the URL of the captured browser window doesn't work.
  • Fix an issue where pasting a .gif file into the Notes sections causes PowerPoint to crash.
  • Fix an issue where links to other slides point to the wrong slide when saving the presentation as a PDF file.
  • Fix an issue where edit view doesn't display correctly when it's dragged to a different monitor that has a different screen resolution.

  • Fix an issue where the option to share a secondary monitor doesn't appear with certain monitor configurations on Window 10 Version 1607 (also known as the Anniversary Update).
  • Fix an issue where Skype for Business crashes when zooming into shared content when the sharer is using a 3rd party implementation of RDP.
  • Fix an issue where, when Skype for Business connects to a SIP server over port 443 and a proxy server is present, there is a significant delay in the sign-in process if the proxy doesn't allow such connections. The fix is enabled by adding the EnableDetectProxyForAllConnections DWORD registry entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\UCCPlatform\Lync, and setting the value to 1.
  • Fix an issue where viewers see a black screen when a user is running Windows 7 and shares the main monitor first, and then switches to share a second monitor.

  • UML templates: Three templates— Component, Communication, and Deployment—that are compliant with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) 2.5 standard.

  • Reduced functionality mode for shared computer activation: When using shared computer activation, if the user closes the sign-in window or the user's licensing token expires, the user can still use the Office app, but the app will be in reduced functionality mode.

  • Fix an issue where, when opening an Office app, the user receives an error message that Microsoft can't find the license for the application and that a repair attempt was unsuccessful or cancelled, and then the Office app closes.
