SharePoint Designer Open Site Error

I am trying to open a company SharePoint site in SharePoint Designer, I get the following error.....

"Microsoft SharePoint Designer does not support editing non-Sharepoint sites."

This is most definitely a Sharepoint site that I created and am the owner of but this is on a work site.

What am I missing or doing wrong?

Thank you

Hi @JacqueBickley-7017,

Try as follows:

  1. Exit and then restart SharePoint Designer.

  2. Clear SharePoint designer cache: https://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/sagarp/how-to-clear-your-sharepoint-designer-20102013-cache/

  3. Reinstall the application via this location: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35491

For anyone else still encountering this issue, I just ran into the same. According to another member of my team who heard it from Microsoft's support team, SharePoint Designer relies on Internet Explorer to establish credentials with M365/SharePoint Online. I opened IE and accessed our SharePoint tenant in that browser, then re-started SharePoint Designer. It was immediately able to connect to the site (no cache clear or editing the registry was necessary). If you're finding this thread, I hope this additional troubleshooting info helps you as it would have helped me!

I recently started having this same problem with Designer. I had received a new laptop and Internet Explorer was not on it because our company has transitioned to the new Edge. Before trying to download it I read this from an article: "Microsoft is bidding goodbye to its age-old Internet Explorer browser. Well not entirely, but Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer 11 for its 365 apps on August 17, 2021."
Does anyone know if they intend on providing an update to SharePoint Designer that will rely on Edge to establish credentials with M365/SharePoint Online? The modern SharePoint experience still requires certain things to be done thru SP Designer (changing URL of lists & libraries or if you have an old site that still uses site templates, etc...).
Any info would be appreciated!
