Why does Win 10 version 2004 show as 'Not applicable' in WSUS

Win10 version 1909 (x64) - WSUS shows all clients either needing update (v1809 currently installed) or installed.
Win 10 version 2004 (x64) - WSUS shows all clients as 'Not needed' & 'Not Applicable"

I approved it and it downloaded, but it continues to show as 'Not Applicable', even for the clients that have version 1909 already installed.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi,
We had a similar problem with a customers network.
We'd followed the same process we'd used at other sites to approve 20H2 via WSUS but the 2004 PCs would always show the update as "Not Applicable".

We could manually update the PCs using Microsoft Update Assistant so it wasn't a hardware or driver issue. We'd checked the WindowsUpdateLog but there were no clues there.

We did notice however one update for the PCs showing as:
Feature Update to Windows 10 Version 20H2 x64-based systems 2020-12 via Enablement Package

We researched that via the link below.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/feature-update-through-windows-10-version-20h2-enablement-package-02d91e04-931e-f00d-090c-015467c49f6c

Anyway the long and short of it was this is a shortcut update for PCs that originally were built as 2004. The update just activates dormant parts of the OS that converts it to 20H2. Its a quicker update process.

The pre-reqs are:

  • Servicing stack update for Windows 10, version 2004: September 8, 2020 or a later servicing stack update

  • October 13, 2020—KB4579311 (OS Build 19041.572) or a later cumulative update

We hadn't noticed this at some other customer sites as the PCs had been upgraded from 1909 or lower through 2004 onto 20H2.

As the article says, "If a device is updating from Windows 10, version 1909 or an earlier version, this feature update enablement package cannot be manually installed"

So you have to use the full feature update for 1909 clients.
