ssrs 2019 asking for a username and a password

Hi,

Installed vs 2019 community, the ssrs visx add in, and sql server reporting services, enabled IIS, can see Reporting Services started in Task Manager. Now when I try to run a report in the Visual Studio 2019 SSRS editor it asks for a user name and password. It's not a complicated environment, there is only one admin userid on the windows 10 machine that I know of. That userid doesn't seem to work either with the password or the pin. What userid is it looking for?

Hi @FlashGordon-7254 ,
I think I know what you were facing now. Did you mean a pop out box from the browser , right ?

This is asking for the credential to log in the report web portal. When hit the "start" button, this needs a prerequisite that the web portal is well functioning (this requires a report server database). So the scene we faced before is logical.

If we really want to view the report without a report server database, you could click the preview tab in the VS design page. This allows us to view the report directly in VS

Joy

It wants the credentials to access the report's data source.

dspatrick, thanks, useful idea and something new. But my Shared Data Sources doesn't expand and doesn't show the options you show. You gave me an idea and I gave a database login since that's what this report was reading. That didn't work. The title of my login box is Reporting Services Login, like maybe it wants the credentials for the piece of IIS that is hosting Reporting Services.

Then it may not be a shared data source but instead an embedded source.

dspatrick, I don't have a data source that expands. ![33462-forquest.jpg][1] tried to show my solution explorer. my attaches and pastes of jpeg's just show as file names. this is just a simple report against one ms sql table and it previews. I think it wants formal access to Report Server (and report server has to specify the userids that have access) although I've gotten SSRS ReportServer working on earlier versions and don't remember having to do this if you were just running on one laptop.

This happened because I didn't have a reportserver database. When i added a reportserver database in Report Services Configuration Manager, everything started working. You have to select Change Database in the Database tab for it to add a ReportServer database.

Strange one, I've never heard of installing SSRS without a report server database.

DSPatrick, I agree but for those of you who are interested, watch this video. You have "Change Database" in the Database tab of Reporting Services Configuration Manager to initialize the ReportServer database. Why the prompt is "Change Database" instead of Initialize Database, I have no idea. But everything came up roses after I did that. To check yourself look, at the Databases in your Management Studio. There has to be a ReportServer database there or you aren't going to be able to do anything other than preview reports.

Agreed, but when you add SSRS to an SQL server installation the report server database and all components are a part of it.

Hi @FlashGordon-7254 ,
Could you share the screenshot of the window which asking for the user name / password?
I suspect it is the pop out that ask for a VS community account which you could create using a Microsoft account/hotmail account.

Joyzhao, My ms sql ReportServer database is installed now so I don't get that login prompt and I didn't screen print it. I can describe it pretty well and it was a simple login box. When I was in VS 2019 looking at an SSRS report and I hit Start the login box came up. The title of the box was "Reporting Services Login" and it had a username and a password and that was it. I put in my msdn (microsoft) id, my local admin user account, my admin account with a local domain, the special sa userid i made for my ms sql db instance and nothing worked. If you want to replicate the login box:

I'm running a very current Windows 10 Home with IIS enabled and a very current MS Sql Express db.
