Exchange online - AADconnect - Exchange

Hi ,
yet another challenge.
A customer is in the cloud with full cloud identity.
This was done by a cutover migration from an exchange2013.
Now , the customer has decided that they want AADConnect.
No problem there, i can softmatch the users.
Exchange server is not uninstalled.
The thing is , this Exchange server is not in hybrid - so the user's mailboxes are still on the databases.
In a hybrid server, these users are mail enabled users (after migration) and you can just delete the databases and downsize the server.
In this case ,I just want to keep this server as a "management" server and downsize it.
Do i need to run the hybrid wizard on this machine ?

kind regards,
Filip

If you just want to manage users from on-premises, and no hybrid features are needed (such as mailbox migration, mail routing...), you don't have to run HCW.

Here is a similar thread, this user's organization is in a hybrid deployment. He wants to upgrade from Exchange 2010 to 2016, and use Exchange 2016 for user management. The hybrid configuration is not needed and will be removed. For your reference:
Decommision last Exchange 2010,
Scenario two.

Hi ,
i have read these articles , but my situation is different.
In this case there has never been a hybrid - so the user still have onprem mailboxes.
i want to delete these databases to free up the space (it is a small customer with limited disk capacity).
i assume if i delete the databases (as users have mailboxes in cloud), the user's will be deleted from the exchange management gui as well?

If you see the users as a mail user, that means only the Active directory synchronized the user to Azure AD and you still have mailbox residing on-premises. If you want users' mailboxes on the cloud, you have to migrate the user mailboxes to the cloud.

you can run a hybrid configuration wizard to get ready with migration and migrate mailboxes to the Microsoft 365.

some extra information :
what i actually want to do is conver the usermailboxes to mail-enabled users as i will keep the onprem exchange to do mgmt.
i just tried that but i have to disable the mailbox and run the enable-remotemailbox afterwards.
when i do that , the proxy addresses will be removed as well.
Can i avoid this step as i will have to add all the aliases manually then.

Do all user mailboxes migrated to O365? If all on-premises user mailboxes are migrated successfully with cutover method, and they won't be used anymore, you can just remove them from on-premises Exchange servers, then remove the database. Perform the soft match as you mentioned, and Hybrid configuration is not needed.
