Hello. I recently upgraded to the latest version of the Windows Performance Toolkit (September 2023 build) and am receiving the following error message when opening traces:
I've seen this error mentioned here and here. The overall advice seems to be "use the latest build." I believe I am using the latest WPT build, and the issue is still happening. I tried going back to an older version of WPT, and the issue is now happening there too.
FYI. I obtained the 9/2023 build of WPT from the Visual Studio installer. The versions of WPT that came with the SDK and ADK had neither WPRUI.exe nor xperf.exe. Any thoughts on why that's happening? Thanks.

This might be a different problem (I am inclined to that that it is different). Can you share a simple/small .etl file that triggers the problem?

In the mean time, what leads you to think that this might be a different problem? Could you recommend any troubleshooting steps I could try? Thanks!

It feels a bit banal to write it, but I suspect that it is a different problem because the error dialog text is not identical with the known error; the troubleshooting steps are to identify the code source of the error using a managed or non-managed debugger (e.g. mdbg, cdb) and a tool to examine the ETW events in detail (having identified the event that triggered the problem via the debugger).

2024-02-16T01:51:29.0633333+00:00 (I had to install the specific version, as I couldn't get the web installer for the Windows SDK (as linked to from here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/aa969767(v=vs.110)?redirectedfrom=MSDN) to complete. There was at least one failed URLs for components it wanted to install, and even though it gave an offline option, I couldn't find an alternative source on the web or my computer, so had to cancel each time.

When I load that file with a version of WPA freshly installed from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/test/wpt/windows-performance-analyzer, the load is successful.
When I try to load the file with an older version of WPA, I get the same error. The problem is event ID 150 version 1 (MethodDCEndILToNativeMap) from the Microsoft-Windows-DotNETRuntimeRundown provider when ReJITID has the value 2 (ReadyToRun, probably only 0 (QuickJitted) and 1 (OptimizedTier1) are recognized values); this is essentially the same event as that which was previously the cause of the problem (the version of the event may have changed since then). When I filter out that event, the load is successful even in relatively old versions of WPA.
Some options include:
- Checking again whether a newer version of WPA can be found/installed.
- Creating a custom profile from the standard profile and removing the Microsoft-Windows-DotNETRuntimeRundown provider (unless you need its functionality).
- Filtering the .etl file before trying to load it into WPA to exclude MethodDCEndILToNativeMap version 1 events.

2024-02-22T05:35:37.07+00:00 Thanks Gary, I can't install with the generic/latest WPA installer, some kind of download issue. I suppose I mustn't have had the latest version. Oh well, that's another issue, and I used other information to diagnose the performance issue and hopefully the install issue is fixed next time I try and I don't hit this again :-).
