Unable to install optional feature

Hello, In our enterprise, we deploy windows updates through SCCM for our Windows 10 computers. It's working fine. To be able to install optionnal feature, we have a GPO that enable this parameter "Download repair content and optional features directly from windows update instead of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)". It's working fine but now, it's not working at all. I don't know how long it hasn't worked. I deploy a new VM in Windows 10 1903, it's working. I upgrade it to 20H2, it doesn't work ! We have the same problem with Windows 11 computers. Do you have an idea ? Many thanks. Have a nice day. Best regards

Hello, If you’re unable to install optional features on Windows 10 or 11, here are some steps you can try: Ensure Windows is Updated: Before you try anything else, make sure your system is up to date. You can do this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and clicking on ‘Check for updates’. Use Windows Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can help resolve issues with installing optional features. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. Check Internet Connection: Sometimes, your internet connection can cause issues with downloading and installing optional features. Make sure you’re connected to a stable network. Check if any error happened when install option feature. Reset Windows Update Components: Resetting the Windows Update components can often resolve issues with installing optional features. To complete, in the CBS log and in the dism log, we see the error 0x800f0594 that tell us that it try to go on the WSUS even if the "Download repair content and optional features directly from windows update instead of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)" is enable.

Change Other (Autres) to Windows Update and it will fix the problem, HOWEVER it also seems to introduce dual scan where it will ignore WSUS in all 3 other cases (so I've seen with my install, so I reverted it). Beyond that, you must load the optional components into WSUS https://www.ajtek.ca/wsus/how-to-install-net-3-5-rsat-tools-and-other-optional-components-with-wsus/

Hello, I change "Other" to Windows updates, but it doesn't work :-( I already the option "Download repair content and optional features directly from Windows Update instead of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS): Enabled" If I try with powershell, same problem

It appears to be an SCCM client issue. The client forces all updates, including optional feature updates, to go through the WSUS server. The workaround is to go into the registry and modify the HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU\UseWUServer to 0. Restart the Windows Update Service. Install the optional feature. Change the registry key back to 1. Restart the Windows Update Service.
Hopefully there will be a permanent fix soon.

Hello,

I take a computer that has a "old" version of SCCM client, 5.00.9096.1000 and I can install optionnal feature !

It seem it's SCCM new version that crash this component.

Does Microsoft have a solution ?

I did (in April) and had the following result:

The behaviour is by design. SCCM sets the sources of windows updates (see picture below) automatically. You can change this, but then it's for all other updates too.

As agreed, I have consulted internally and unfortunately, there is currently no information available regarding potential plans to include a functionality in future ConfigMgr versions that will allow to specify separate sources for each class below:

As for the second topic, I have tested in my lab by applying “Specify source service for specific classes of Windows Updates” as a Domain GPO with the below config. While it did not create entries in the log suggesting a conflict with the CCM Agent’s activity, we advise against configuring it as a Domain GPO (which would apply permanently) as it would also impact the monthly Windows updates, not just Optional Features:

Quality updates: Quality updates deliver both security and nonsecurity fixes. Quality updates include security updates, critical updates, servicing stack updates, and driver updates. They're typically released on the second Tuesday of each month, though they can be released at any time. The second-Tuesday releases are the ones that focus on security updates. Quality updates are cumulative, so installing the latest quality update is sufficient to get all the available fixes for a specific feature update, including any out-of-band security fixes and any servicing stack updates that might have been released previously.

For the time being, it seems that the option you have identified, to modify the registry keys / local GPO when needed, may be the one presenting the fewest complications, given that, for the time being, the behaviour you are experiencing is by design.

This behavior is a catastrophe, unable to install an optionnal feature.
