my hp elitebook x360 g2 1030 looses ability to connect to external displays via USB-C and HDMI after KB4577671

how can I get the external display (via USB-C, HDMI) back?

    This is the strangest thing ... and quite annoying. Here is what I did to get the external screens back to work, but it feels like voodoo:

    (1) uninstall the updates by reverting to previous recovery point
    => screen still does not work
    (2) unplug everything, wait 10s, dance around the desk, pray to the heavens and the earth
    (3) restart labtop and screen
    => screen is back with both USB-C and HDMI
    (4) scan for Windows updates again, let them install (including 4577671) with external screen plugged in
    => screen stays

    Would (2) have worked without going back to the restore point? I will never know.
    Would (4) have worked without the external monitor plugged in? I will never know.

    you could try these troubleshooting steps before modifying system settings:

    • Confirm the monitor is correctly connected to a power source, and it's turned on.
    • Restart the computer to re-establish the connection.
    • Use the built-in controls on the monitor and make sure the correct input is selected.
    • Check the signal cable connection between the monitor and device's graphics card.
    • Disconnect the signal cable from both ends, wait about a minute, and reconnect it.
    • Use a different signal cable to confirm the problem is a broken connector or bad cable.
    • DisplayPort and HDMI come in different versions, so make sure to use the correct cable. (Check manufacturer for details).
    • Switch ports if the monitor and graphics card include multiple ports.
    • Connect the monitor to another computer to determine if it's not a problem with the monitor.
    • Connect another known working monitor to determine if the issue isn't the graphics card.
    • Disconnect all peripherals (such as printers, cameras, USB devices, etc.) to confirm that none of the other devices are conflicting with the display.

    Confirm the monitor is correctly connected to a power source, and it's turned on.
    => workerd yesterday (before update), tried both HDMI and USB-C, tried 2 different monitors, monitor sees connection but says "no signal"

    Restart the computer to re-establish the connection.
    => same after restart

    Use the built-in controls on the monitor and make sure the correct input is selected.
    => monitor autoamtically select USB-C or HDMI depending on which connexction I try

    Check the signal cable connection between the monitor and device's graphics card.
    => workerd yesterday (before update), tried both HDMI and USB-C, tried 2 different monitors, monitor sees connection but says "no signal"

    Disconnect the signal cable from both ends, wait about a minute, and reconnect it.
    => used to work with USB-C, after failure I tried HDMI, but HDMI does no work either
    => powered monitor on and off, no change

    Use a different signal cable to confirm the problem is a broken connector or bad cable.
    => problem is there with USB-C and HDMI cable

    DisplayPort and HDMI come in different versions, so make sure to use the correct cable. (Check manufacturer for details).
    => oth cables worked in the past, USB-C yesterday, HDMI some weeks ago

    => problem is there with USB-C and HDMI cable

    Connect the monitor to another computer to determine if it's not a problem with the monitor.
    => both monitors I tried are fine

    Connect another known working monitor to determine if the issue isn't the graphics card.
    => I cannot use any monitor after the update ... so it definitely has to do with how Windows works with the built-in (the machine is a labtop) graphic card

    Disconnect all peripherals (such as printers, cameras, USB devices, etc.) to confirm that none of the other devices are conflicting with the display.
    => there is only a USB mouse, disconnecting the mouse does not change anything
