W10 version 2004 and conexant audio drivers

Does the known issue below also affect the Conexant 20762 SmartAudio HD drivers installed on my Lenovo T420 Thinkpad? Thus preventing W10 update from V1904 to 2004.... Thanks for any info, Nick Jenneson

After waiting for months for an update to the Conexant audio drivers - that I believe is unlikely to ever come - I found another forum where several people had luck with just changing the driver from Conexant to the Microsoft HD audio driver instead and everything worked fine. I tried the same with my ASUS GL-552VW laptop...and sure enough, I updated directly to Windows 20H2 and had no issues whatsoever. When I rebooted into the new version, the Conexant audio drivers had been reinstalled and I've had no issues at all.

My advice - stop messing with Conexant drivers altogether and switch to a generic MS driver (select update driver and select Browse My Computer - the MS HD Audio driver should already be there. Select it and then run the Windows Assistant manual update program - and everything works!

If you're waiting for Conexant and Synaptics or Microsoft to update this driver, don't hold your breath - just work around it.

You should have a generic driver already available:
Right click Windows Menu and select Device Manager
Find your Sound, video and game controllers and expand that item
Right-click on the Conexant audio item and select "update driver"
Select "Browse my computer for drivers"
Select "Let me pick from a list..."
You should see "High Definition Audio Device" or something along those lines - select that one and then Next

That should install the generic Microsoft driver and if you run the Windows Update Assistant manually, it will allow you to install 20H2 directly: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

This just forces the update from Windows Update - you shouldn't have any problems and once the install is complete, it will automatically reinstall the proper Conexant audio driver for you! After that, you should have no problem with future updates.

I'm still waiting for Microsoft to update us, I've got a Lenovo Ideapad 310-15IKB (model 80TV) laptop and I still can't upgrade and support for version 1909 ends in just 3 months and I have no idea what to do.

Hello Flynn - do try the suggestion above from DaleHuhtala-9912 - worked for me. All OK & up and running 202H update from v1909

Windows seems to want to install 20H2 automatically without making changes to Device Manager but it's still saying can't get 2004 in Windows Update lol.

Do I need Conexant AND Realtek. I only started looking at these drivers because of the weird dll names like PremiumBlackSkinImages64.dll, PremiumBlack2SkinImages64.dll BlackSkinImages64.dll, DarkSkinImages64.dll and GrayJadeSkinImages64.dll.

Hi,

You could check your driver version, from 8.66.0.0 through 8.66.89.00, if sits in this range that may be problem.
I recommended you check with your device manufacturer (OEM) to see if an updated driver is available and install it.
You could refer to following link from Lenovo support to check if this helps:

Hi Jenny,

I checked the driver for my Conexant 20762 SmartAudio HD in Device Manager under Sound, Video and Game controllers and it is version 8.32.44.0 dated 15/05/2014. I have also run a scan using the online Lenovo driver checker and it reported no updates required.

As you are aware Conexant don't directly provide their drivers to end users but only to the manufacturers that use their products, like Lenovo.
I do not plan to do anything further at this time and will await the results of your investigations.

I would also like to point out that the Conexant driver descriptions posted in the known issues with v2004 are NOT the same as the driver title of my installed driver, so I suspect it is potentially different to other Conexant audio drivers [which can be found elsewhere on the web].

Mine is 8.32.43.0 dated 08/08/2012. Yet still not offering me the last 2 Windows updates, it's "not ready for my device",which is a Lenovo X220. No updated drivers from Lenovo.

On the same topic, I have a HP Spectre X360 15 laptop with Conexant SmartAudio HD.

The driver version (both in Device Manager and the properties of CHDRT64.sys) is 8.65.129.61 dated 15th May 2017.

The driver version therefore does not fall within the scope of those listed but I'm not being offered either of this year's major updates.

Is there anything definitive as to whether this version is affected or not?

Thanks.
