Authenticator produces 8 digit instead of six digit verification code

I am required to login to my Microsoft account but my authenticator produces 8 digits instead of six. There is also no option to get the verification code through my mobile.

Any solutions??

It's urgent.

This is ridiculous year has passed and there is still no fix tot his situation. I bet if it affected your stock in anyway you all would fix it immediately, because of this issue I am losing out on thousands of dollars a day, i have called Microsoft many times and your IT experts are as useless as the app. Is there anyway i can delete the authenticator app and not have to use it for any of my logging in, at this point I would rather my stuff be unsafe than to deal with your unresponsiveness and your IT peoples lack of knowledge about their own software.

Hello @good-3732, thank you for reaching out and choosing the Microsoft Q&A platform. I believe you are seeing the 8-digit code on your Authenticator App because the Passwordless signing is enabled for your Microsoft account (personal Microsoft account). You can identify the same by looking for a key symbol listed on the top of your account in the Authenticator App profile.

I would suggest you to take a look at the steps mentioned here and see if this helps: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c04a9e6c-9bd0-43b2-80f9-2399242b3f92/microsoft-authenticator-app-gives-8-digit-code-instead-of-required-6-for-azure?forum=ApplicationInsights#:~:text=You%20should%20have%20setup%20a,provide%20you%208%20digit%20codes.&text=Two%20step%20verification%20provides%206%20digit%20codes.

Do let us know your if the above steps helped, and if it didn't do update us on that too so that we can look into this further. Also, please do not forget to accept the response as an Answer; if the above response helped in answering your query.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem and tried your fix. Thanks, but it didn't help.

My Authenticator issues began when I upgraded my iPhone, which although effectively a clone of my previous device stopped receiving Authenticator notifications and also generates 8-digit codes rather than the 6-digit codes requested by my client's Teams login. Incredibly frustrating.

Do you have any further advice?

Hello- I had the similar issue. I upgraded my iphone and synced the data and ,y authenticator stopped working and was generating 8 digit code. I called Microsoft support team and they said a technician will help and I have to pay 199$. Such an irresponsible and ridiculous response. Let me explain my scenario before giving details on how I resolved it. I had a gmail account which I used to login to azure portal and it had global admin rights. I enabled MFA on that account but wasnt getting approve requests on the microsoft authen app. The one-time pass code was also 8 digits. Google said, I have enabled passwordless authnetication, disable two step authentication etc, I did all that but nothing worked.
Lastly, I deleted/removed the gmail account from the authenticator app, then signed in the azure portal with my gmail account, went to AZure AD, users, selected the global admin user, authentication methods, there was an option to re-rgister MFA. I clicked that. Then signout and signedin again, gave the password, then I got a screen asking to register for two factor authentication with the QR code. I scanned that QR code in the authenticator app and it was successful. The passcode returned to 6 digits.
I believe if you change the device, re-register for MFA, scan the QR code and it should work.

Just my 2 cents on this. May be your case is different. Honestly, microsoft support sucks.

Hello! Since I updated to an iPhone 12 Pro recently. I noticed that now my Microsoft authenticator app gives me an 8-digit code and before I was using a 6-digit code for one of my apps, and now I can not get into that app. I tried turning off the 2-factor authentication option in my Microsoft account like the article you linked said to do, but that did not help. PLEASE tell me how to go back to a 6-digit code option.

Thanks!
Nicole

Same exact situation as Nicole. I'm totally stuck on this issue. Have you had any luck since? Does anyone know what's going on? @soumi-MSFT any advice?

As soon as I upgraded my phone, most apps stopped working with Authenticator because its generating 8 numbers and they are asking for 6.

My app does not show the key symbol next to the user name as you described it.
I turned off 2-factor authentication but I still get 8 digit codes.

Any help?

Hi all
I am really having trouble logging in with my new created account for my company. I think I have made a mistake with logging in with both a personal account and as a work account. For some reason when trying to login with my work account which is the same email address as the personal account it is asking me for authenticator app 6 digits. But my authenticator app is showing 8 digits. So i am totally stucked, and is not able to login to my work account.

How is it possible to get some help from Microsoft.?

Thanks in advance
Søren

I have the same problem. iOS updated, then 8 digit codes. Have since gone back to an Android phone and still 8 digits on my personal MS account but 6 digits on my school account. Doesn't help though, because the 6 digit codes from my school account aren't accepted when I log in to personal accounts, i.e. PayPal. Very frustrating. Have logged out, logged in, changed password, reinstalled the app, and I don't have passwordless log in turned on.
