Unable to create new Trainable Classifiers in Purview Compliance portal

Hello! This is probably a simple thing that I'm missing, but I'm a little stumped. The "Create trainable classifier" button is currently greyed out within Purview Compliance > Data classification > Classifiers and I'm unable to begin the process of creating custom classifiers. Both other forms of classifiers (Sensitive Info Types, EDM classifiers) are working.

Currently, my account:

  • Is a Global Admin in the tenant
  • Is a Compliance Admin in Purview
  • Uses an M365 E5 license

So far, I've tried:

  • Accessing this area from multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Brave)
  • Clearing my cache
  • Accessing this area across multiple machines (Windows laptop, MacBook Air)

Most documentation implies that a Global Admin in the tenant needs to opt-in to Trainable Classifiers for the tenant and that that initiates a scan; I'm not finding anywhere obvious within Purview's settings or help documentation to make that toggle, however.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide! Thanks!

No it's an existing tenant. There is no message about scanning.

Hi, I also have this issue. It used to be there as of March 11, 2024 but I can no longer find it.

@Evan Morse The issue on Creating Custom classifiers will be resolved by opting to upgrade to the new Purview version by filling in the form below.

The improved version will replace the existing instance of the Trainable Classifier feature, and the benefits are to be expected are:

    • Faster training time, with no need for a background model to be created prior to the custom classifier creation.
    • Simpler sample document gathering – only a positive sample set, and negative sample set is required at the beginning of training.
    •  Automatic testing - No longer is a test set of both positive and negative samples required at the testing stage. Now this is automatic.
    • More clarity around the trainable classifier creation flow and results.

Kindly Note that existing custom trainable classifiers that were created prior to this feature and currently unpublished will no longer be available.

If you wish to turn on the new Purview Version of Purview, kindly fill this form and we will have the new version enabled for you.
