It seems like I can't find a reasonable document that explains how to use a PowerBI Data source that is created using the DataGateway.

Could someone please explain why I can't select it? Am I supposed to be able to choose this data source from PowerBI Desktop?

I keep looking for a way to use the datasources and cannot find anything.

    Hi ComputerHabit,

The Power BI Gateway is a crucial component of Microsoft Power BI. It serves as a bridge between the Power BI service in the cloud and your on-premises data sources. Here’s what you need to know:

Purpose: The Power BI Gateway allows you to securely connect and refresh data from your on-premises data sources within Power BI reports and dashboards.

    Functionality:

Data Transfer: It facilitates data transfer between the cloud-based Power BI service and your on-premises data sources.

Refreshing Data: You can keep your dashboards and reports up to date by connecting to on-premises data without physically moving the data.

Controlled Access: The gateway ensures secure and controlled access to your on-premises data.

    Modes:

Standard Mode: This mode serves multiple users with access control per data source. It supports features like DirectQuery and live connections to Analysis Services.

Personal Mode: In this mode, the gateway runs as a single user with your credentials. It’s suitable for scenarios where you’re the sole user accessing on-premises data.

    Installation and Setup:

Easy Installation: Download and install the gateway with minimal interactions.

Single Gateway for Multiple Services: You can use the same gateway for Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, and Azure Logic Apps.

    Security:

Data transfer between Power BI and the on-premises data gateway is secured through Azure Service Bus.

Credentials provided by gateway administrators are encrypted, ensuring protection of your information in the cloud.
